A truly professional job shows the foresight you’ve put into your build. I love the redundancy you’ve judiciously incorporated into not just the lights but the other parts of the bus’ dc power system.

My 2000 Monaco dynasty uses the same rocker switches but they are just wired to simple 30 amp automotive relays. You have a very nice system but in my case for troubleshooting and fixing I’m glad I have the simple system that I have. You guys must spend as much time planning as actually doing the job. You make an excellent team.

Rocker switches get the job done :). Thank you for the kind words - we do spend a great deal of time planning which has served us well in most cases. I will admit that we over-plan sometimes :) One feature that we use quite a bit is turning off all the lights from our phones! Sounds lazy but with a single button we can turn off every light in the coach and just go to sleep.

I'm in awe that you put this kind of detail into just the lighting circuitry. I'm content just to have an on-off switch and maybe a dimmer on two or three lights. I can just imagine what a future owner of this bus will do when they open this cabinet and look at the circuit boards and wiring! Hopefully you made schematics of all of this along with a components parts list and printed out a copy and have it in the bus somewhere.

Thank you - yes as you can imagine we have everything documented and labeled. Yes this old bus will have to come with a big book of how everything works.

Juan and Michelle this makes me appreciate more of what you have achieved in your coach build. WOW there is a lot of wiring involved and everything else that supports the lighting of the coach. I had no idea that when I visited you all in Virginia at KOA Doswell Virginia at Kings Dominion what actually went into the lighting. I knew about the complexities of the plumbing, the battery build the tear down of the old plumbing routing I saw that the lighting is a marvelous work of are that you two accomplished. I was in awe at what you had done watching every week or so. I know from visiting with you that you both are proud of your family and all of the things that you have done and will continue to do. Thank you so much for sharing the video with us. Ed

Hope its okay I went to nerd heaven watching this. One of the first things that drew me to your channel was the automation plans but then after watching your videos I fell in love with your wonderful family. You are so much braver then me to do all that cable management before all is hooked up and tested Lol. Such a great job on the install. I would of ended up with a rats nest.

Thank you Jerry - this comment made my day. I was able to test small things here and there but not the entire system so it was a little nerve wracking. I am glad to report that a little over a year later nothing has malfunctioned and the system works exactly as I have designed. I am hoping to finish part 2 here in the next few days which will show more of it working and explains how everything comes together. Thank you for coming on this crazy journey with us - I always look forward to hearing from you.

Way over my head but it was educational regardless and I would buy your book if you put one together I want to put the LED strip lights all over the coach even that is completely different from the old days. You make it look simple though. Thanks for sharing guys.

Juan - I just bought a 8.5 x 32 utility trailer and ammo beginning insulation and suspension work. The timing of you video is perfect for me. I have planned extensive automation using HA and ESPhome, obtained ESP32 boards with POE so they can be distributed where needed. I am planning on being all electric with a 24Kwhr battery bank and 10kw inverter/charger. I will be monitoring (for parasitic draw) and controlling all circuits. I will have 3200 watts of solar on the roof. I am very interested in hearing about details such as how your wiring is done and how your articulated solar rack has worked out. Any tidbits you can put on the blog along those lines would be appreciated. I have never done any of this before, so your knowledge is invaluable. I wish you and Michelle great travels!

Sounds awesome Thomas!! Michelle and are very happy to share everything we have learned. I am running HA with ESPHome and it is amazing! I started out writing everything by hand with Arduino and ESPHome has been a complete godsend. The rack has required some maintenance we have replaced a few sliders and both actuators (water got into the limit switches) but we have used it A TON and are still very very very happy with it.
@TrailerAdventures55
2 жыл бұрын
Juan / Michelle - So I am curious about your sliders. I am planning on using wheels from a sliding glass shower door, so I am hoping that there is little maintenance needed. Also, were your actuators IP66 rated? Those are kind of pricey, but as they say "buy once, cry once". I would like to do something that would last 5+ years. What size are your actuators? I plan on having single axis solar tracking, so my rack will have to pivot at the edge.

This is exactly how I'd do the wiring on a bus. Really smart of you to use the ESP32s. So versatile. So inexpensive.
@BeginningfromthisMorning
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The ESP32s have been amazing! It's hard to believe they only cost about $5 shipped to your door. We haven't had a single hiccup even tho we take our bus to some crazy places off-road and have been bouncing around for over a year now! Next week I'll get to the input side (there were a few challenges) and the software I wrote to use them.

Very nicely done! And came out so neat & tidy too...a really awesome job you guys! The only thing I would have done differently would be to use ferrules on the stranded wires going in to each board...but I love ferrules a bit too much :)

Thank you Gregory - Great observation! We actually tried to use ferrules but could not get them to fit! We usually use them on EVERYTHING.

Well thought out but I would have had at least 1 screw in each. After all, it's going to bounce around
@BeginningfromthisMorning

Thank you Steve - great suggestion! Screwing them in would have probably been better (with spacers) but after a year of bouncing around everywhere they are still staying put. If they come undone I will probably 3d print some stand-offs and screw them into the wall :).

Instead of having “over ride” MOSFETS, couldn’t you have just run parallel negatives, one through the control board and one to the rocker switch? That way either the control board or the switch could complete the path back to ground.
@BeginningfromthisMorning
Жыл бұрын
Sorry I had some trouble articulating the problem. I wanted one "over ride" switch to control multiple zones (2 zones in the living room, 2 zones in the kitchen, 2 zones in the bathroom). If I just wire them to parallel wires it would electrically connect those zones together and I would lose the ability to control them independently. Even when the override switch is off - if I power one zone 1 with the control board then zone 2 would also light up because they are electrically connected at the switch.

... great build (again) ... but: I won't trust those wire nuts in a moving vehicle at all - didn't you have some WAGOS left?
@BeginningfromthisMorning
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Tom. Wire nuts are my most hated connection type (even in a house). If you look really closely you will see that those are actually closed end crimp connectors. I did use Wagos on the 12V and 5V power wires for future expansion.

@BeginningfromthisMorning

Hi Taylor! Yes I am using ESPHome - WHAT A GREAT PIECE OF SOFTWARE! I started out writing an raw sockets and an MQTT client by hand .... that was a nightmare after about just 2 inputs and 1 output! ESPHome was a real godsend!
@taylorlightfoot

@@BeginningfromthisMorning It really is such a great platform for accomplishing so many different custom DIY projects. I used ESPHome to make a custom gate strike relay and mailbox sensors at my house, lighting control in closets with a door sensor, status lights with RGBW LED's, etc. I like that you can code them to have basic functionality running directly on the ESP in case your home automation hub loses connection or something happens to it.

The obvious lack of planning is apparent in the execution. The wiring looks very messy. I’m 49 years old but I’ve been doing electrical work for 62 years now and I can honestly say that pineapple absolutely belongs on pizza. Could you have said flux capacitor at least once?
