Finkel disgusts me. He admits he lied during his job at the NYT "because it made a better story." Then he exploits this story to "redeem" himself, and admits (in other articles) that even though he pledged to be honest with Longo as his subject, he lied to him. He also admitted that he ended up falling for Longo's schtick and helped him with his defense. Then he makes a ton of money off the murders and still talks to Longo to this day. He's a narcissist too.

You can't compare the two. Christian Lingo killed his wife and 3 children. Cut them up and then stuffed them in suitcases and tossed them into the river. Murders that he would never fully admit to. He even blamed his wife. He's the disgusting one. Michael finkel may have lied. But who hasn't. He's also a great journalist he single-handedly turned a small town murder into a national headline.

Elenizen I agree. Netflix has just released the movie 'True Story' and it doesn't reflect well on Finkel at all. I think he was totally taken in by Longo, believed his lies and wanted to profit as much as he could by the association. He was unemployed and this was a 'godsend' to him. According to the movie he still talks to Longo. Why would he do that? It makes no sense except in the context of him writing another book about him when he (Longo) has been to the death chamber....

Should Truman Capote be called a narcissist and no better than the murderers for writing the story he did? How about Ann Rice? These books give us an in-depth look in order to begin to understand, not excuse but understand, the horrific mind of a killer. We need to understand it to prevent it, not to mention natural human curiosity. It's so horrible we can't fathom it, so we almost need to know more about why. This story makes no sense. I just saw the movie which makes no sense either. Narcissists don't kill people as a rule, they are just very annoying and destructive emotionally to those around them. It looked like he had a happy well adjusted family. Why would he suddenly turn on them? Why did no one delve into that? That is the real story of interest here. Just calling him a narcissist and a liar and then saying case closed, that is pretty dry. I know the NY Times is a dry paper, but this is just to the point of being completely confusing. I also don't see why someone would want to talk to a man whole stole his identity. I think that would make you want to have nothing to do with him. Did the man steal the reporter's identity just to get him to come and write about him? If he was such a clever man, there has to be more to his story than just narcissism.

i agree with you , the this is when you watch a movie based on a true story you tend to have mixed feeling between movie minor twisting and what really happened , i do think there's more to the story , human mentality are so complicated and there's no typical example on particular disorder meaning not all patients with NPD are the same , the thing is Christian Longo never go diagnosed with NPD and assuming that only by letters is quite weak
@imolaunger

Sadly, it makes perfect sense. That's what sociopaths do. They craft a perfectly normal, well-adjusted image. There is no such thing as a happy family for a sociopath. The family is an accessory for his image, a tool to achieve whatever his vision of success is. There's plenty of research on that, there's no need to delve into why a person like that would suddenly exterminate his entire family. What needs research is how people can be trained to spot evil like that and prevent as many such cases as possible.

True story IS NOT A TRUE STORY. This is my theory. My theory is mike finkle the “New York Times reporter” who lost his job as A journalist after being discredited and could not find employment as a journalist introduced the world to Chris Largo , “family man killer” after writing a book based on his own investigation, tittles “True Story”. The movie ends stating Mike Finkle no longer writes for The NY Times but Chris Largo does write articles from death row. Show less

So? An actor’s job is to…wait for it…act…NOT to look exactly like someone they’re not. It’s not as if Finkel is some major public figure like JFK or MLK, so who cares if Jonah Hill looked like him or not. Jonah gave a great performance, as did Franco and everyone else in that film. I guarantee you didn’t even know what any of the real people looked like before the film, so what does it matter as long as the story was told and the performances were stellar?

For all the comments saying Finkel is the same are being quite ignorant. The fact he made money from it is because there is a willing audience there to throw there money at it. They made a film of it too, are the actors also not as guilty of the same thing those in the comments section are calling out Finkel for. How many people are subbed to one of the many true crime channels on KZitem, that are pointing their rather self righteous fingers at Finkel and pretending they are any different. There is a reason why these crimes get so much attention, and that is we all love a true crime story, we watch with our supposed moral outrage, before quickly forgetting and moving onto the next story. So i say before comparing Finkel to the child killer take a look in the mirror and ask are you really in any position to be writing those comments!
@SY-ok2dq

It is ingrained in humans, it's part of their nature, to judge others. This was a lucky break for Finkel really. A once in a lifetime scoop. It may sound awful, but he kind of owes his career resurrection to Christian Longo. Well, Finkel made the best of the situation. Most of us would. Finkel was a journalist. That was what he'd trained for, and had already achieved success in. How many people would want to throw away the chance to restart their careers, a career that they'd devoted themselves to like Finkel? It's easy to say for people who aren't in that position.

It's exactly because he was working for such a prestigious and big newspaper that Finkel would have felt the pressure to produce a better story. The stakes are high. If he was working for some little regional newspaper in some small state, the stakes are low so there's no pressure to come up with a great story. Just hand in what you have. After all, you could land a similar job at a small-town newspaper easily. It's like imagine if you get some minimum wage job at a fast food restaurant. Are you really going to be sweating over your performance review???? Turnover at such jobs is high because lots of people are willing to quit at the drop of a hat if they find a better job (and they often do).
