Yep; the unmistakable sound of the famed 2 stroke. A sound not heard nearly enough, anymore

If the siren failed, you would still hear the truck coming. Good ole Jimmys.

I have found memories of watching my towns firetrucks in many a parade, detroit power was the standard, loved when the trucks would stop right in front my spot and idle, exhaust pipe pointed right at my face.

Me too! The new at the time (1971ish) Maxims had 8V71s but there were other older rigs that had big gas motors and they were also super cool sounding

Our town had a '68 ALF Pioneer, you could hear that truck all over town! The current Chief also misses the old truck.

Definitely an 8V71N, I used to own one in a 1975 KW COE before I dropped a 8V92TA in it and they sound completely different.

+DailyDieselDose I know alotta guys bitched when the 4 strokes came along. Same way the generator guys did (like me) 4 strokes respond to load so slowly compared to the ol detroits.

I'll never forget ordering our first ever batch of 8v92's, in 6 new 1986 International Eagles that we bought. Many of our Trucks at the time, were being operated off-road, in softer ground (road building). We were brought in to help step up the pace of road building, around the upcoming 330 shoreline mile, 41,356 acre Richland Chambers Reservoir, near Corsicana Texas. Fun times! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richland-Chambers_Reservoir The main reason we wanted to try these, was because of their low torque output at idle. The more inexperienced drivers had often times not been easy enough on letting out the clutch, on the soft ground, with a load. Snapping too many U-joints, twisting a couple of driveshafts, and busting a few ring-gear teeth. So we put them in these Trucks. The rest of us ran around with our big Cat and Cummins inline 6's.

Still a few left in some Crowns and Gillig Schoolies mostly in LA and then some Fire Trucks up here. I got a pic of a Ward LaFrance at one of the stations that same day. I'll try to get footage of that one soon.
