From that clip it seemed like it's the good ol' limbs eating up damage. Tarkov's body part HP pool system is a great idea but needs a lot of tuning. Hitting some naked scav 5 shots in the torso with a M4 very commonly leads to nothing because the HP system. Theoretically 3 shots to the chest would have killed that Scav, but what happens way too often in Tarkov is only 1 of those 5 shots hit the chest and 2 of those shots hit the stomach and 2 of those hit arms, thus making the target tank way too much damage even without armor. Albeit every time their limb gets hit they are also losing HP in other body parts, but imo Nikita has to make limbs not stop any ammo that has more than 10 penetration point and the projectile should still retain 80% of its original damage if it hits chest after penetrating limbs, or they need to make chest/stomach/head take way higher damage even if someone gets hit in the limbs or other body parts

The Big Makarov drum mag is a real thing. However it wasn't made specifically for the Makarov it was made for the "Stechen?" a full automatic Makarov designed with special law enforcement purposes. It's also supposed to have an 80 round capacity however like most drum mags It's really unreliable.
@jarink1
3 жыл бұрын
Not really. While both shoot 9x18 Makarov ammo, the Stechkin normally uses a 20 round double-stack mag (There is an 80 mag for the Stechkin) versus an 8 round single stack on the Makarov. No way that tall, thick Stechkin mag fits into the Makarov's mag well. Having said that, I have seen photos of a custom-built Makarov 80 round mag. It likely was made using a combination of the two magazines.

Amazingly, It actually is a real thing. If you look up the 80rd Makarov PM drum? They do exist and TheFirearmBlog has an article about them. There's also a Reddit post on the ForgottenWeapons subreddit about these, and they're apparently designed for Russian police/SWAT team officers who are using ballistic/riot shields and a sidearm, which makes sense since trying to reload while carrying a ballistic shield can get you killed. In the 1990s and 2000s, Russia was dealing with an economic disaster from the collapse of the USSR which generated a huge increase in crime (both lone wolf criminals and organized gangs/groups like the Russian Mafia) and terrorism. However many police departments couldn't afford to arm all their officers with nice modern carbines/SMGs like the AKS-74u or 9A91 or a PP-19 Bizon. Even to this day, Makarov pistols are still very common to see in police use since they're compact, are battle proven, and they have trained with them for years and years, so there's that familiarity. There's also a machine pistol closely related to the Makarov called the APS Stechkin, it's a full auto machine pistol with a C96 Mauser Broomhandle style wooden stock that doubles as a holster, there's also a variant called the APB Stechkin that is equipped with a folding wire stock and a quick detach silencer. The APS uses a 20rd magazine that looks like an extended Makarov mag, I wonder if the drum could be used on the Stechkin, that would make a LOT more sense. While it's heavy, bulky, and likely is prone to feeding issues, as a niche/special purpose tool for close quarters combat and counter terrorism that's cheaper than equipping officers with brand new carbines/SMGs? I could see the premise behind it. I don't know if these were ever used, but apparently these were made in very small numbers for law enforcement officers carrying ballistic/riot shields. TLDR Yes they exist, produced in very small numbers for cops/SWAT/counter terrorism officers using ballistic shields and a sidearm in one hand.

There is another game that has the mechanic of the direction of fire is dictated by where the gun on the screen is physically pointing: Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. Another quirk about it is that you can't exactly do 180 no-scope shots in it, because when you move your mouse your character might change direction which you are facing, but there is a slight bit of lag in which he brings the gun up to point in the same direction so if you click the fire button on the mouse too quickly when turning, your shots will go wild.

My friend's father has an SKS that is so tricked out its absurd. It has an angled sight, magnified red dot, laser, banana mag, polymer stock, and an angled foregrip and pistol grip. You couldn't tell it was an SKS unless you know what to look for. Also has another one, similarly modified, but its a bullpup. And it took me holding it and looking at the chamber to even realize it WAS an SKS. Serious WTF moment.

To be fair though, for the most part scav AI in tarkov is really good and they react more dynamically to various situations than most games and rarely just stand there like morons when taking fire. Also most of the hits where to the limbs, a chest shot would have had more effect. Still, not the most flattering example of AI being shot in tarkov.

I'd love to see Jonathan review the guns in Metro: Exodus (or indeed any of the Metro games) - I loved how the crafting mechanics in Exodus would change the way a gun acted and felt to use (he mentions the drum mag on the Makarov in the vid, but Exodus did this as well, where different configurations of mag, barrel and stock all had distinct advantages/disadvantages. That, and the guns are all technically feasible or are based off real world guns, firing real-world ammo (for the most part), so it'd be interesting to get his take on their design and implementation in the game.

He writes (in Russian) that the Makarov is still in use by police in Russia not because they cannot afford new pistols but because the Makarov is genuinely loved. He says the problem with them is that standard magazine only holds eight rounds and extended magazines only hold up 12 rounds. Twelve rounds is not a lot by todays standards, especially when you consider that the 9x18mm is about 30% less powerful than a 9x19mm NATO. His solution was to develop a drum magazine that holds eighty rounds." It's for sure not widely produced but there definitely are some out in the wild.

One thing I noticed in this (and several other videos) is that most of these shooter games, even the realistic ones, don’t actually seem to model where the gun muzzle is. What I mean by this is that you’ll often see players using weapons with elevated sights where the gun muzzle is a few inches below the sights or optic and yet they are able to shoot accurately the moment the sights clear an obstacle. It’s like the bullets are coming from the sights. What would actually happen is while the sights might clearly see the target the weapon would actually be shooting the cover instead. There are a few gun fails videos around where you see this very thing happen. Just a minor nit pick, but especially in a game that’s otherwise fairly realistic it kind of stands out.

I have in fact encountered images of the Makarov drum magazine. I have even seen an image of one in use with what I believe was a Spetsnaz soldier of some kind. They are apparently a rare item and were created by a small town gunsmith if my memory serves me well. The reasoning behind its creation was due to local police and armed forces enjoying the Makarov but wishing for a greater magazine capacity. Again, if I am not misremembering they are made by cutting the magazine lip off of a PPSH drum and welding a Makarov magazine with its baseplate removed on to it.
