When I was seven years old my granddad gave me a used 8 ft Penn Yan dinghy along with an unrestored, Firestone 3.6 outboard...haha. That engine sparked the beginning of my love affair with all outboard motors. My elderly Firestone had some issues, so as a young boy I would always give it a "pep talk" before I started tugging on the pull cord which for some reason seemed to work. Your restoration is magnificent and at the age of 65, this video has flooded me with so many great memories. Cheers!!!!

Greetings from Texas. It's great to see someone do a proper resto any project and to get results that make it factory fresh. Fantastic work. I would like to see in detail on how the starting procedure is.

starting is done just like I did in the video just make sure the vent on the top of the gas cap is open and put lever in "start" and hold the choke in as you pull the rope.

bigdmc1 Thanks for the tip about the vent. I did clean the carb. What about the other settings It has what I believe is the original Firestone plugs in great condition. No rust in the tank. It has good spark too.

Nice Motor, What year is this 3.6 ? I just picked one up that looks 99% like yours, only difference is no pull start recoiler. It is stamped 470-1881 on the side of the motor and the plate states 3.6HP 4000rpm. I assume mine is a 1947 based on model 470 . i am starting the restoration now

Where did you find the water pump. I got a Scott Atwater 3.6 that’s not starting but I need to find avid on carburetor adjustments. These are the best trolling motors because they can run so slow. Slower than any other gas motor

I'm curious...what is you mix ratio for oil to gas. It doesn't appear that your motor smokes much. I have a 1958 Johnson 3hp and the mix ratio is 1/2 pint (8oz )of oil to a gallon of gas and smokes like crazy. I've checked the rings and appear to be in good shape. Any suggestions other than just mixing in less oil? I've tried to lean it out with the adjustments on the carb but no luck.

Aren't you missing a handle on the back of the motor ? Just asking because I had a 3.5 Scott Atwater that looked very similar (in white) and it had that painted stamped steel handle. In any case, beautiful job ! (and happy with the sound). And by the way, mine had pinholes as well that were simply brazed with lead.
