Market Gardening in Southeast Alaska
Notes Week Ending July 27

Approximately 7 lb lettuce mix from previous week delivered to senior center. Discard chive transplants that have been sitting for months in peat cups after realizing that I haven't had time to move soil to NE hugelkultur where they would have been planted, note that deer have chewed down all of the uncovered fireweed, and blueberry plants with green berries under hoops are overtaken by weeds.
Final Seeding & Transplanting:
NE4B green onions transplant the third and final ~6 ft patch, and NE3B cilantro second transplanting ~10 ft to see if it won't bolt later in the season. Also, NE6A red & green Salanova lettuce transplant the seventh and final ~20 ft patch after the third patch was removed from that section last week. Both the cilantro and green lettuce were transplanted out too small just to get the plants into the ground. Note that transplants seem to struggle more in the different potting soil that I used for soil blocks this year compared to the type of potting soil that I used the year before. NE7B 20 ft where the second patch of Salanova was removed previously and NE9B ~10 ft remove flowering mustard plants, then Jang-seed both sections with two rows of spinach on the east side and three rows of mizuna on the west side, all before a forecast of rain the following day.
Harvest Herbs, Onions, Greens:
Start with harvesting herbs while the weather and leaves are dry. NE3B dill harvest ~1/2 lb for customer making pickles, and NE3A parsley first full harvest of parsley after clover in the pathway beside was removed last week. NE10 Harvest mature chard and check slug boards - nicest bed of chard that I've ever grown with the slug boards and insect netting used for the first time on this crop this season like in the past season with the kale. Friday before selling, harvest NE9A Collards & NE8 Kale, then later check slug boards under those two beds. Finding a handful of slugs under all three greens beds, less than the last time. Also that morning, GH2 basil harvest and cut lightly in hopes of enough regrowth for the following week because forecast is for overcast or rain ahead.
Harvest Lettuce Mix:
NW1B mizuna two rows on the west cut once have bolted and I end up pulling them out at the end of the week to give the three rows of sprouting baby chard more light. Harvest NW1A BChard (2) three rows ~10 ft and GH2S orach single row for lettuce mix. NE6B Salanova harvest fourth patch total four tubs and end up using only one tub of green and two tubs of red for mix, and later clean up heads for regrowth by removing outer leaves. First time running lettuce mix through the greens bubble after 6 PM when all orders have come in, but still make more bags than I can sell.
Harvest Peas, Carrots, Green Onions:
NE1 peas harvest. NE2 peas almost ready to harvest. NW4 carrots harvest for the first time (they were probably ready to harvest last week), pulling ~300 carrots to make 34 bunches (later harvest more straight from the garden for a customer). Planning to clear that bed first to give space for the new tunnel. Use new twisties to bunch the carrots for the first time, and they work much easier than using rubber bands. Bag peas in large ~8 oz packs for the first time in addition to the small ~4 oz packs. NE4B Gonions (1) harvest final 9 bunches from that first patch. Later, NE4A first leek harvest of four plants.
Chop up NW 6 - 8 garlic scapes harvested and stored in fridge last week. Tried using food processor, but blade got clogged, so hand-chopped the scapes to make 38 bags ~ 8 oz each placed in wax bags inside a tub in freezer. Also freeze ~7 lb of kale accumulated over a number of weeks in the fridge.
