You’re one of the few people who consistently (correctly) comments on the dryness of Pilot nibs without pressure. I’m led to believe that most people use way too much pressure when writing.

I have no issue with the 18k fine nib, it writes wonderfully!

@@PenFriends I have maybe 10 pilots, including 4 Namikis, and they were all very dry out of the box.

@@ryanu5629 that’s really unfortunate, which namiki’s do you have ?

The nearest I've got to Namiki is a 845 with a medium, which came a little dry out of the box. Had Jose increase the ink flow recently and it's now a fabulous writer.

@@PenFriends a Yukari Owl F, a Yukari Royale Vermilion F, an Emperor Black M, and an Emperor Vermilion FM. I tuned them all myself to write wetter. Actually, the Owl's nib was too toothy for me and Pilot refused to swap the nib so I bought a 742 in medium and installed its nib on the Namiki with an ebonite feed. Of course, it was very dry as well and had to be tuned.

The hira maki-e is screen printed on this pen, but because it’s very cheap in Japan one can’t expect a lot of hand painted aspects. Interestingly, the yukari I own, retails in Japan for about the same price as you’d pay for a nippon art! But again, the lower end pens have a lot of screen printed elements. Only the signature based pens are fully had printed. Still, they are beautiful pens and as such are certainly worthy! The Royale size would be more your cuppa! But, the price may put you off :(

Argh! Silly me, I thought the signature indicated it was hand done, not printed - I thought it felt like a bargain for that amount of skilled work. Thanks for correcting me and sharing with anyone who watches this! Agree that the Royale is a much better size for me but I’m not enough of a fan of maki-e to justify the premium.

@@UKfountainpens no problem, the signature is of the Kokkokai which is essentially a group of artisans. Each person is a part of a factory line and it basically allows a high turn over of pens. Placement of the design is actually machined stamped, from what I understand and then some elements are hand finished. I want to say these pens retain for about 450 pounds in Japan. For 450 I think these pens offer a lot of value, it’s just a shame we get a crippling pilot tax in the west :(

Is it worth getting this pen at 700GBP if it's machine printed?
