Carly Simon is from a wealthy family….Simon & Shuster publishers very well known. In the song she speaks of the high society and sees thru its dark side.

The beginning of the video shows "George Harrison of the Beatles" on stage with "Art Garfunkel" of "Simon & Garfunkel". Neither of those guys show up to see someone play that isn't fantastic. Carly also sings "Your So Vain" with Mick Jagger singing back ground vocals.

So deep. Pessimism followed by resignation, because "That's the way I always heard it should be." Masterful storytelling!

I can’t tell you how EXCITED I was, to hear you’re doing a channel exclusively for live performances!!! A GENIUS idea.🙏 (As a helpless, hopeless Queen/Freddie Mercury fan, I’ve been “spoiled” because Queen are actually renowned for being BETTER LIVE than in-studio, which is what got me “hooked” on them… Freddie’s vocals are actually BETTER live and his energy/audience interactions are legendary/UN-matched.)🫶

Carly just had a way of relaxing you into her songs, her music. As a singer songwriter, she plays piano and acoustic guitar. You should check out the next song from this same concert. Carly performs her second hit single, "Anticipation" which won her the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1971. Just last year she was finally inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Her catalog spans 3 decades and she shines through all genres she takes on as a singer.

Great song and very timely in the 70s when women started to question "what I've always heard it should be" ---getting married and having kids. Women's lib! Love Carly!!

My parents were a couple of infantile adrenaline addicts. They didn't drink or get physically violent and I'm very grateful for that. They didn't even use bad language. But at home they ceaselessly tried to verbally destroy each other. So yeah, 12 year old me found this song incredibly cathartic. I decided early on I would marry someone I genuinely liked and got along with. I did. We just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary and I still like my husband for all the reasons I liked him in the first place.

Funny how the theme of the lyrics reminds me of a completely different song, "Once In A Lifetime," by the Talking Heads.

Hi Ace...I love Carly Simon. She is definitely one of my old favorites. I have a question for you. What happened to your love of Lucy? You have now ignored her for quite a while. You have missed her very first public appearance where she sang live at a sold out theater in her home town. We finally get to see Lucy sing LIVE without studio enhancements. Her world debut!!! I was twelve or thirteen when this song came out so I really didn't get the full meaning of it ! The seventies were the beginning of women's lib bra burning women starting to believe that there was more to life than being a wife and mother! I believe Carly believe that too!

I know the song well, and after 41 years together with my husband, well, yeah, that's the way a bad marriage turns out, but you hang together out of habit and lack of other options. And, yeah, familial love. Not in love, but love. It sucks. But like we say in my house, "i remember when i still loved you." I thank God we had no children. Sad. No we were 17 and 19, and we never learned to be who we were by ourselves. I hate this song.
