"I want to know what became of the changes we waited for Love to bring." When it was first released in the late 70s, this song represented nostalgia for the activist components of the baby boom generation, such as the civil rights and anti-war movements, and the rejection of materialism and the "American Dream" as defined by Madison Avenue. By the late 70s the older boomers were in their 30s and coming into the work force. They were portrayed as idealistic hippies rejecting their dreams for a better world for everyone and replacing them with self-centered dreams of bigger houses in the suburbs, bigger televisions, etc. This is where the Pretender comes in. He embraces this materialistic lifestyle in place of bigger dreams that he had given up on at some point. Note that he and his lover's dreams weren't even their own, they were paint-by-numbers dreams, pre-packaged for the masses. Because the ships bearing their real dreams have sailed out of sight. The song laments the loss of his youthful ideals in favor of "legal tender." Almost 50 years after its first release, The Pretender today as a reminder to never lose your youthful enthusiasm, your ideals, never become cynical about the world. Things never get better as quickly as you want them to, but if you give up they will never get better. The better world we want to live in is not a place, it is a goal. "Say a prayer for the Pretender, who started out so young and strong, only to surrender."

When you didn't interrupt the song, I laughed to myseld and said... "Jackson swept 'em away." That is what the man and his artistry does. I saw him live about 12 years ago at the National Arts Center in Ottawa. Just him, 17 guitars on a rack in front of him and a keyboard. It was fantastic... a highlight of my life. Have you done Doctor My Eyes yet? Have you done Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate? LIves in the Balance? In the Shape of a Heart? There are lots of songs to choose from, and they will all sweep you away.

@@SeeMoreBucks - I am usually pretty good at reading people and situations. My read on this is Jay was given some grief for taking too much control and dominating the reaction videos. Where that criticism came from? Perhaps viewers. Perhaps Amber. But you can see he held back quite a bit and let Amber ramble. Unfortunately, no way for me to know if my instinct is correct on this. In a 1997 interview, Browne said of "The Pretender": "It is two things at once. It's that person in all of us that has a higher ideal, and the part that has settled for compromise - like Truffaut says, there's the movie you set out to make, and there's the one you settle for." Browne goes on to say: "The Pretender is about '60s idealism, the idea of life being about love and brotherhood, justice, social change and enlightenment, those concepts we were flooded with as our generation hit its stride; and how, later, we settled for something quite different. So when I say 'say a prayer for the pretender,' I'm talking about those people who are trying to convince themselves that there really was nothing to that idealism."
