When Jackson was writing “Doctor My Eyes” he lived below Glenn Frey before the Eagles. Every morning Glenn would be awakened early with a tea kettle, followed by hours of the same song on the piano, over and over. It occurred to Glenn “so that’s how you write songs, you put in the work”.

And the flip side is Glenn was known to party late, jamming. Jackson couldn't sleep from the music so he had an: "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." moment. "Take it Easy" resulted it would seem.

Running on Empty came out in 1977, so he is an old soul now. But his history does go back to the 1960s, and when he was young he was tied to Andy Warhol. But he made his name around Los Angeles, was friends with the guys who became Eagles, and wrote Take It Easy with Glenn Frey. Well respected, and despite some rough times in his life, he is still out there performing.

He was also good friends with the late Warren Zevon. There was a whole gang of singers and songwriters in the 70s who hung out together, wrote songs together, and sang on each other's albums. Jackon, Warren, the Eagles members, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, guitarist Waddy Wachtel, drummer Russ Kunkel, even writer/journalist Hunter S Thompson and actor Johnny Depp.

Lyrics: [Verse 1] Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields In '65, I was seventeen and running up 101 I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on [Chorus] Running on, running on empty Running on, running blind Running on, running into the sun But I'm running behind [Verse 2] Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive In '69, I was twenty-one and I called the road my own I don't know when that road turned onto the road I'm on [Chorus] Running on, running on empty Running on, running blind Running on, running into the sun But I'm running behind [Bridge] Everyone I know, everywhere I go People need some reason to believe I don't know about anyone but me If it takes all night, that'll be all right If I can get you to smile before I leave [Verse 3] Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels Look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through Looking into their eyes I see them running too [Chorus] Running on, running on empty Running on, running blind Running on, running into the sun But I'm running behind Honey, you really tempt me You know the way you look so kind I'd love to stick around but I'm running behind (Running on) You know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find (Running blind) Running into the sun but I'm running behind

I saw Jackson live just last month -- he's still got it! Two early songs of his you might like -- "These Days," written when he was seventeen, and his first major hit, "Doctor My Eyes," a hit song fifty years ago. And you're right, he's an old soul.
@foxandscout
Жыл бұрын
These Days: written when he was 16. He didn’t record it for years. First Nico!(Warhol’s Velvet Underground) recorded it in 1967 . Then folksinger Tom Rush in 1970. Then Jackson’s friend, Greg Allman (Allman Brothers) began to sing it on tour and both he and Jackson finally recorded it within a few weeks of each other in 1973. Many have recorded it since. A gorgeous song of loss and regret, it’s incredible for a young teen to write it. Jackson Brown released in on the album For Everyman. Every song a gem.

Boulevard, That Girl Could Sing, Hold On, Hold Out, Call it a Loan, Somebody's Baby (his highest-charting single, appears in the movie, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"), Lawyers in Love, Tender is the Night, For a Rocker, For America, In the Shape of a Heart, Lives in the Balance, Lawless Avenues, World in Motion (duet with Bonnie Raitt), Chasing You Into the Light, The Word Justice (written while Nelson Mandela was still in prison in South Africa) & I am a Patriot (written by Steven Van Zandt, a rebuke of political parties on both sides).

70's and early 80's classic rock had that unique sound where bands and the studio engineers would use a panning effect (think using your headphones where the sound moves from one side to the other), and where each instrument shines, and yet plays together with the incredible harmonies; and had lyrics and melodies that could lift you beyond the clouds. The 70's also had the most ambitious music of any recent decade. Jackson Browne and other groups exemplified that. Brilliant.

I had the privilege of selling t-shirts at one of his concerts in the early 90s. A Native American friend of mine asked me to help them out since all of the proceeds of the sales went to their organization. The concert was fantastic--much smaller than the time I had seen him in the early 80s at a big outdoor festival. (I had also seen him at a big rally in Central Park.) Long a fan of his, I was flabbergasted when he invited us to meet him backstage! He was small in stature and very soft spoken and was genuinely interested in the cause. While Running on Empty was huge when I was in high school, my heart was in his earlier stuff (I could probably still sing every song on his debut album) like "Doctor, My Eyes", "Something Fine", "Rock Me On the Water" as well as Late for the Sky. His lyrical abilities are superior.

Love him, love this song. Reminds me of driving with windows open, radio blasting and loving life. He always looked so much younger than he actually was.

This song always reminds me of my big sis, who has had a huge influence in my musical tastes. She is 15 years older than me, so I literally grew up with this music on the turntable, volume pumped, from the time I was born. She had an old pickup truck in the 80s, when I was a teenager, and the gas gauge was broken, always pointing to E. A friend of hers was driving it into Tulsa listening to this song, so my sister grabbed her video camera and made a little video of the gas gauge on empty, rolling down the highway, Tulsa skyline in the distance, while JB belts out "Running on empty!" Your videos trigger such specific memories for me. I love watching you!

What a lovely way to see things. Yes, there are times when we find ourselves running on empty in this old world, but the fact that we can sing about it and use it to make ourselves free is a wonderful thing.

This was the opening track from the album of the same name, released in 1977 (JB's 4th). The Load-out/Stay was the closing track. The album was all about life on the road for a band on tour, and songs ran the gamut from quiet and introspective (The Road, Cocaine) to humerous (Rosie), to rockers (You Love the Thunder, Nothing But Time). It was all recorded on the road, partly on stage during concerts and rehearsals, and partly in hotel rooms and even while riding down the road on the bus.

They never heard the whole closing track, just the cover of “Stay”. 🙄

This is a brief but powerful microcosm of Southern California music - circa late 60s & early 70s. Browne living upstairs, downstairs, or a stone's throw from Ronstadt, Souther & Frey. So much great talent so close to each other in their formative years. The line, "65 I was 17, and running-up 101" - a fond nod to the iconic U.S. Route 101 in Southern Cal.

Saw him with Billy Joel in 1977. But everytime I hear this song now I think of, "I just felt like runnin'."
