Mama Cass, the lady saying "wow" at the end was part of the (at the time) super group, The Mamas & The Papas. The Monterey Pop Festival was one of the first big outdoor Rock Concerts. Check out Eric Burdon & The Animals' hit "Monterey" in which he names the big acts who played that day.

Considering everything that had come before her, this must have been such a wonderful shock to the audience, who'd have heard nothing like her before this. Like Mama Cass herself, that was more what people knew from female singers. The 60's were the start of that open, anything is allowed in art, era. And she epitomized that.

You've got to understand NOBODY had heard Janis before the Monterey Pop Festival...the one you're watching. She blew the roof off the place (well it was actually outside, but you get it). Cass Elliot was the woman they kept showing. Cass was one of the Mamas and the Papas band. THEY were responsible for this, the first rock festival. They called in a lot of favors to make it happen. Imagine how it must have been for Janis. She was frightened little girl when she walk on stage, she left a famous woman. I saw Janis often, living in the Bay Area.

Cass Elliot was probably THE premier female vocalist at the time of this festival. You see her is the crowd, mouth agape and simply astonished. The crown passed hands. You just watched Janis Joplin becoming the new benchmark, and Cass Elliot handing over the crown. An absolutely stunning performance. There are some that say there is no such thing as a soul, and others say that, like a belief in a God, that it exists, you can't see it or touch it, but it is there. If anyone you know questions the existence of a soul, show them a video of Janis performing.

In interviews, Janis Joplin said her inspiration was the great African American Blues singers if the 1920s & 30s. I believe this song was originally sung by Mama Thorton...I could be wrong. Most white people ( like me) had never heard those earlier blues artist because white radio stations would not play their records.Janis was a middle class girl from Texas. Her choice of music and style of singing was condemned in some circles because of the black origins. It infuriates me that she allowed heroin into her life. Oh the music she would have given the world.
