Ive been a songwriter with SonyATV publishing for 2 years now and been in the industry for 6 years overall. Wonderwall by Oasis is one of the most overrated, generic rock/pop songs ever constructed. The melody on the verses has been done many times before them, the artists that did it just didn't have as big of a reach as they did (they were signed to universal music group so the song got big) it is your standard, lackadaisical freestyling that many artists do when we hear a chill guitar riff/loop. Most artists make an effort to add layers to the song and really make it pop. They didnt and the song being as big as it is shows how feeble minded and unaware music fans are of actual 10 out of 10 songs. There is only one out of around 4 melodies that would come out decent on this instrumental. Sometimes when im in a session and toplining for a producer i come up with a similar melody to wonderwall with little to no effort. Many pop songs recycle the same 5-7 patterns and melodies. This type of music doesn't impress me, the songs on The Weeknd's Thursday or house of balloons impress me. The melodies freddie mercury and queen came up with impress me. Songs by Frank ocean like Swim Good, Novacane, Songs for women, are genius and unique unlike anything ive ever heard before. Wonderwall by Oasis is just the melody the average 13 year old comes up with in his room playing around with his guitar. Oasis is the most successful band to come out of the stellar Manchester music scene of the late 1970s to early 1990s. Back when I wrote for Spin magazine, I covered their concert in Seattle on their final tour and I had tears in my eyes when Noel Gallagher sang and played "Wonderwall" with just his acoustic guitar. Absolute magic. Certainly The Beatles were an influence on them but their fellow Mancunians, The Smiths, were even more. Check out their song "How Soon is Now?" You've never heard such a brilliant, haunting guitar riff. Also, you can go all the way back to 1980 and listen to Joy Division, also a huge influence on Oasis and without question the best Manchester band. Their mournful songs "Dead Souls" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" are like nothing you've ever heard before. So glad you enjoyed Oasis. They have a lengthy catalogue of music but some of my favorites are "Slide Away", "Columbia", "D'You Know What I Mean?" and the tragically beautiful, "Talk Tonight".

Oasis are reuniting and playing gigs in the UK next year after spiltting up 15 years ago. I cannot tell you how important this is to a generation of Brits. In the mid 90s we had been under conservative government for 15 years and there was a massive musical movement called Britpop, cigerettes and Alcohol, Parklife, Common People, A design for life and Firestarter became working class anthems and ushered in a new era of British culture which was the envy of the world. Music, Films, Art and Fashion. It all started here with Oasis.
