Freddie had laryngitis the week before this concert and was advised by his doctor to cancel his appearance. He ignored the advice an went on to make rock history. He had far too much class to destroy his guitar, he didn't need to do things like that to keep his audience happy - he entertained with talent, not gimmicks.

That is not true. Watch the documentary "Against All Odds," about Live Aid, and you will see that when Geldof announced which bands would be performing -- BEFORE the tickets went on sale -- he included Queen in that list of bands. It was not a Queen audience in the sense that it was not simply a Queen concert and people would have been buying tickets to see other bands on the bill, and/or because it was such a huge event.

The guitarist is PhD Brian May (no honorary doctorate, he is an astrophysicist and wrote his doctoral thesis there) He built his guitar, the "Red Special", together with his father at the age of 17, using wood from an old fireplace, parts of a moped and a butter knife. He is also an excellent singer with his own songs and has written a lot of Queen's songs as well as the other band members. All 4 have had number one hits. If you look closely you can see that Brian uses 3 different guitars in the song Crazy Little Things Called Love.

There's an interesting vid titled "Queen Guitarist Brian May talks about building the Red Special guitar." He doesn't say anything about a moped or butter knife, but does say; It was built without power tools. The back is from an old table, the neck from a then 100 year old fireplace, dot markers are from his mother's button box & he also used 1 of her old, large knitting needles.

@@kendallneason3645 Some extra on the Deacy Amp. At 20, John got his 1st class degree in electronics at Chelsea College, London. 1972, he built the amp, which included parts he found in a dumpster. Brian loved the amp & heavily used it from the 70s-90s. It never failed, nor needed repair. In 1998, Brian agreed to having a replica made & it was opened for the 1st time, but multiple experts couldn’t figure out how it worked. Early 2000s, they even posted pics on the net, hoping another expert could help. Finally, in 2008, Brian gave permission to completely tear it down, after which they were able to build a “close enough” replica to call it a Deacy Amp (I don’t think they ever got it exact). Pretty impressive work, for something built 36 years earlier, by a 21 year old. There are some interesting (though sometime, very technical), articles about it, on the net.

Listening to a Queen song and recognizing it is normal. Queen's music is used in Movies, TV shows, Adverts (commercials), and at sporting events. "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" was written by Freddie as an homage to Elvis Presley shortly after his death. "We Will Rock You" was written by Brian May as a song intended for crowd participation. "We are the Champions" was written by Freddie. the other song you will possibly recognize is "Another One Bites The Dust" written by John Deacon (Queen's biggest selling single)

At the time of Live Aid I was serving in the British Royal Marine Commandos in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. We listened to it on the radio. We were surrounded by the full horror of the Famine, but when Queen came on the radio those poor soles who were there even reacted in a very positive way. I remember that a lot of us Royal Marine Commandos were crying watching some of the children dancing along, I'm teary eyed just remembering. I looked around at men I had fought alongside, who were tough, hardened Royal Marine Commandos who had fought a life and death war against Argentinian's in 82. By the end of Queen's set we were dancing with the children. It went along way to help build their trust in us. The famine is only one of many terrible memories I have from 35 years of active service, and over 3 years hospitalisation. But when I remember the smiles on the children's faces, and their laughter at the terrible way we danced always reminds me that humanity will always find it's way through even the worst of times. I only watched it for the first time 2 year's ago, my son put it on the TV. A lot of memories came back and a lot of tears. My amazing Wife took me to see Queen at Wembley, U.K., in 1986 two weeks after I got back from Ethiopia as a surprise. I saw Queen live 6 times in all, they were incredible live. And yes, I am an old fart.

This is their song? 😯 Yep, and the next one too.🙂 No worries, it seem that many young Americans know this song from sport events and don’t know it’s from Queen. That’s why you’re doing this, right? To discover great music and learn something new. I myself discovered great songs, singers and musicians on KZitem and reaction channels. A movie covering Queen ( with artistic license) is Bohemian Rhapsody. Some people didn’t like it, and I read there are other movies/ docus made about them, but I think it’s worth watching. Like your reaction. Cheers!

I don't think anyone at Wembley enjoyed that day more than Freddie. What a legend.

I've been t a Skid Row concert, a Def Leppard concert, and The Edge concert. I also attended a concert featuring Bobby Darren, Fabian, and Chubby Checker all performing. I never got to go to Queen before Freddie died, sigh.

Knowing that he knew he was dying when he sang this… it’s haunting. It’s gut wrenching. Heart breaking.

Queen never disappoints, there's something for everyone because their music spans every genre. They were innovative and influential, ahead of their time and timeless all rolled into one. Check out Stone Cold Crazy live at the Rainbow and you'll see how they influenced speed metal and rap music all in one short song. Another really great song that shows his incredible crowd interaction is Under Pressure live at Wembley 86. Enjoy your journey into Queen.

As a 50 year old life long queen fan, your reaction was hillarios. Glad you appreciated the best hand ever created. As a 14 year old boy I saw them live in 1986. Amazing

75,000 in the crowd. Freddie had a throat infection and right before going on stage his doctor told him to cancel. He went on with a compromised voice. Can you believe that? They rehearsed for weeks before this and it shows. They stole the show and all the other bands knew it.

Great reaction😉! it is a bit normal for people your age not to know that it is QUEEN who sings this or that song! You've heard them several but never wondered who was singing? QUEEN is one of my favorite bands! I loved them, love them and will love them all my life 💖! Freddie was a showman, a performer (RIP 🙏, I miss him 😢), despite his illness he still had this strength in him! I don't know if you've seen the movie BOHEMIAN RAPSODY(this is my favorite song 😍)?! If you can look at it is a pure wonder 🤩 despite some details not appearing in it (it was a little embellished to the realization🤫)! But it's so moving, touching, informative, with the bonus of the most famous music, it's a treat 👏! My only regret is not going to see them in concert 😞!! A+ 💞

I know this is probably an older video, but this version of the concert video seems to be a new one that cuts out part of the ending and there used to be another one out there that had the full performance. In fact, there's another song later that night that's on one of the videos of Queen at live aid somewhere on the internet. We are the champions was the last song of this set, that's true, but they sang the whole song. I don't know where this version of the video came from, but there's more to the concert, if only by a few more minutes. But yeah, so many people know Queen without knowing they know Queen. They are responsible for the soundtrack of our childhoods and also for many, many TV commercials, as well as movie soundtracks and sporting events.

You had to be there. I was. 80,000 people at Wembley, and another 90,000 watching live at Philadelphia JFK Stadium in the USA. Additionally, it was all televised live. This crowd weren't Queen fans either. The concert was a sell out even before Queen were listed. Each band only had a 20 minute slot, and this is a masterclass in how to cram as many hits into so short a time and carry the crowd along with you. All of the songs are written by the band members (although bassist John Deacon did get a song in the set).

And note Freddie was sick that day, he had a sore throat and his doctor advised him not to perform. Freddie later said singing felt like gargling with a glass. And the audience wasn't pure Queen fans, Queen was only announced as an act when all the tickets were already sold.

Thanks, Doug - also acknowledge the BAND... Brian on guitar - Roger on drums (singing high harmony with Freddie).. and John Deacon on bass.. the heartbeat of the band... so glad you're enjoying this! It was also fun to see you realize how many Queen songs you knew that you didn't realize were by Queen.. what about "Another one Bites the Dust"? - did you know that was Queen? what about "Under Pressure" (which was ripped off by Vanilla Ice? - BTW, he lost the lawsuit on that one).. look forward to more of your reactions...also, P.S. they did an encore with just Fred & Brian - "is this the World we Created"- beautiful and on point... kzitem.info/news/bejne/05-tqqNtmHmpnYI

I was hoping that was the clip where they don't cut it at the end. I felt your pain. The uncut clip is on KZitem also. In regards to the movie about him, please watch it, it's called 'Bohemian rhapsody'. Great film. Loved your reaction too. Subscribed.
