There was a Saturday morning children's show on TV about a heroic dog who rescued children and found people who were lost and his name was Rin Tin Tin. That's what the reference was to when he said he would bark like Rin Tin Tin. Also, back then the telephone company was Southern Bell or South Central Bell and people often referred to the phone company as "Ma Bell". Not only were there telephone booths back then but I'm sure you noticed they had rotary telephones. That's how old this song is. Ray acted in several of his videos but he was primarily a country music SINGER. He acted primarily to portray a character in one of his songs. Most of his songs were humorous like this one but he also had a beautiful voice when he chose to sing serious songs. You might want to check out Everything Is Beautiful which will give you an idea of what his singing voice is like when he isn't being funny. You may also have noticed that the actress who played Margaret in this video was the same one who played "Sister Bertha, Better Than You" in Ray's Mississippi Squirrel Revival. The man in this video is not necessarily an alcoholic but he is a perv who enjoys making obscene phone calls to some unsuspecting woman. Back when this was made telephones did not have caller ID so pervs could make obscene phone calls without anyone knowing who they were and sometimes women would get these annoying calls for months or even years from the same lowlife and sometimes the only way to stop him was to change her phone number and even then they seemed to have a knack for getting the new number and starting their harassing calls all over. I used to get calls from someone who would tell me that they had just seen my husband with another woman and I knew this was a lie because I had just called the place where he worked and he answered the phone so I knew exactly where he was. Keep in mind that this was also before cell phones so if you called a place of business you KNEW that the person who answered actually was at that place of business. Things have changed so much in the last few decades that it is difficult for people your age to even begin to understand how different things were back then. Trying to explain all this makes me feel ancient.

Whew! All that makes me feel ancient too! However, I am pretty ancient anyhow so no problem. Just remember, we who actually are familiar with the things mentioned in this video have had more time to get smarter about the world.

It wasn't hard to get the new phone number because all you had to do was look in the Yellow Pages aka The Phone Book. People can still get phones numbers of other people if they know how to do it.

I kept a smoke alarm near my phone during the time those harassing phone calls were so prevalent, and would "test" my battery as often as I needed. Those annoying calls stopped with consistent battery testing.

@@Lunzatis_Palemoon You could get an unlisted #, but that was more $$.. a lady who lived alone often couldn't go the extra funds. That's also why so many widow ladies would NOT change the phone from their husband's name, or just list themselves by initials.

Now you know what we were laughing at in the 70s and 80s. Ray Stevens is still doing it today. He is not only a musical comedian but also did some serious music also and is a really good singer. Check out" everything is beautiful " one of his non comedy songs. Good to see young people enjoying the same comedy I did then. Some of the funniest comedians are from the 60s through the 80s, you need to check them all out.

Glad you're enjoying this, as Ray Stevens is one of the best performers in this genre. Some of the other songs of his that you should have a listen to include Sittin' Up With the Dead, Santa Claus is Watcin' You, The Shriner's Convention, Too Drunk to Fish, Surfin' USSR, Help Me Make It Through the Night, Taylor Swift is Stalking Me, and Red Hot Chilli Cook-off. Then, though it is somewhat a departure from his usually comedic songs, you should check out his excellent song Everything is Beautiful (as it truly is.)

The video version of this song is much kinder to Willard McBain, with the intrigued Margaret deciding to pay his bail to get him out of jail. The earlier recording I remember from the '80s or so ended with his saying "When I get out, I'm gonna come over with a Weedeater, a live chicken, and some PEACH PRESERVES!" (the last couple words pretty much shouted). Presumably for the album, he stayed in jail. A couple more of his comedy songs to listen to, particularly if you enjoy World Wrestling Entertainment style wrestling are "The Ballad of the Blue Cyclone", it's done in 2 parts, referred to as "The Beginning" and "The End". I'd seen a comment on some videos that the woman who played the role of "Margaret" and "Sister Bertha Better-Than-You" was actually his wife, though I have no credible confirmation of that.

6:51 That tub in her bag is Cool Whip, btw. Despite her protests, apparently Margaret was enjoying the perv's attention. The giggle is what cracks me up! Ray Stevens is primarily a storyteller who delights in poking fun at hypocrisy, societal fads, the stoner culture & people who take themselves WAY too seriously. His career is successful due to talent, but he also never comes across critical toward anyone. He's a real pro & a national treasure.
