I too am 77 years old and when I was in my teens, and the Beatles were king over here in the uk. I was listening to the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson was a genius ! I am still digging up old albums that have committed to CD. The Beach Boys concert is one of my favourites. It was live from the Civic auditorium in Sacramento ! For me - they were my favourites from the sixties !

The Beach Boys were about the beach early on in their career, but they are at the pinnacle of Harmony groups. Brian Wilson, their founder, is by many considered to be the musical genius of this era.

Went I 12 old , in 1964 the hole family went on a summer vacation. It's was Pensacola Florida, my ante Gail was playing the Beach Boys all day long, she made me dance with her, every body was dancing to the Beach Boys music, eating fresh fish, picking oranges on the trees, swimming in the ocean, playing in the white sand. I will never forget it.

I grew up with The Beach Boy's music & had a lot of their records. Brian Wilson was the genius songwriter of the group. They span many decades but I love their early stuff from the 60's-70's. Their music conveys such happy innocent days of youth (surfing, cars, romance). They had tons of hits such as "Surfin' U.S.A.", "Surfin' Safari", "I Get Around", "California Girls", "Help Me, Rhonda", "Barbara Ann", "Sloop John B.", "Fun Fun Fun", "Little Deuce Coupe", "God Only Knows", "In My Room", "Good Vibrations" etc.

You’ve likely heard snippets just being out in the world, and it’s almost certainly been used in films - this is one of their best and most beloved tracks. I was only 11 in 1965 and I liked but didn’t follow them - they were certainly on the airwaves so I heard them everywhere. Years later -I don’t remember exactly, I was 17-22 -I was walking Miami beach and walked by someone playing them loudly: I suddenly “got them” like a bolt of lightning, recognising their genius at expressing what it FELT like to be alive in that moment in American culture. Your emotional reaction was exactly right, one has to let go of skepticism and cynicism and be open to joy and the optimism of youth especially. This is a great illustration how pop was mostly aimed at teenagers then: a high schooler wishing he and his girlfriend could live together, imagining their happy future 🥰

Beach Boys have always made me happy and FAV song is Kokomo! It made an impact in my childhood brain that would go off to daydream land of beautiful tropical island with crystal clear water resting on a beach sipping a piña colada as waves slowly crash onto shore 🏝️, feeling a million miles away from anything I’ve ever known in my life experience. It will happen ❤ I think bc the song starts off wi/Aruba start & chorus: “Aruba, Jamaica, ohh I want to take ya, Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama, Key Largo, Montego, Baby why don’t we go, we’ll get there fast and then we’ll take it slow, that’s where we want to go, way down in Kokomo” Aruba is one of my three destination goals in my life. Kokomo is a pretty above unusual catchy dreamy tune but it’s a song that is written in a way that names a place that doesn’t exist but drops names & imagery of tropical islands but if you really listen, they are never specific and that’s intentional so YOU can have to island getaway fantasy that you come up with and it is dif for everyone (My other 2 of 3 bucket list places are Paris, France and see the little towns I don’t ever hear about. Meet the people. Have some wine and Egypt, must see pyramids of Giza and so many more amazing astonishing parts of our human history with such mystery to this day)

That's not correct - FM had been in existence for some time, and I remember as a 16 year old in 1966 listening to what was called an "underground" station on FM which played all kinds of genres within one program. You could hear The Beatles, John Coltrane, Bach, Love with Arthur Lee, Hank Williams, Muddy Waters, and on and on. That station shaped the way I've listened to music ever since - across all genres from all over the world.
@chrisjenkins6120

@@barrycowan3540 I stand corrected. Research tells me that it was quite expensive to own back in the late 50’s and early 60’s. By the late 60’s you could buy an FM tuner for like $50-$60. I first heard FM back in 1968. It was, like you said, pretty much album oriented. That’s when I heard the Moody Blues album “In Search of the Lost Chord”. We are pretty close age wise. I was 15 in 1966. Again, I stand corrected.🙂↕️

@@chrisjenkins6120 Actually FM broadcasting has been around since abt 1940 or so. It didn't really get much listenership till after WWII and frequencies where changed from what was known as the FM50 band to the FM100 band which is what we use now. So we are talking 1946-47 for the 1st FM broadcast sets. Stereo didn't come along till the early '60s even though stereo recording had been around several before.

Do you like THE BEACH BOYS? So I recommend you listen to "God Only Knows" and "Good Vibrations" which, according to THE BEATLES, are the two most beautiful songs to have been composed (by the brilliant Brian Wilson) and recorded since the beginning of pop rock. And this is not just the opinion of the members of THE BEATLES. These two songs are almost unanimous. Three groups revolutionized the sound of pop rock to the point of becoming references, the 3B's: - THE BEATLES - THE BEACH BOYS - THE BEE GEES Three sound signatures that have become timeless.
