If this were YOUR car... would you restore it? Let me know in the comments! Episode 3 is now up: kzitem.info/news/bejne/to2KuppurGeegpw

The first thing you should buy and install is a brand new gas tank dont even try to pump that rusty gas into the carb. And rebuild the carb. Also remove the spark plugs and put some Marvel mystery oil down the spark plug holes so the pistons can soak. Dump another bottle down the carb. You can also remove the valve covers and take a rubber mallet hammer and gently but firmly tap each valve spring in the middle so to unstuck the valves so you dont bend push rods. Then your ready to put a big socket on the harmonic balancier and use a big break over and turn the motor over for the first time. Some guys for the first start use a lawn mower gas tank and a electric fuel pump and unhook the fuel pump too. so they dont suck all the garbage rust out of the old tank. kzitem.info/news/bejne/mK6FmWiPppt0Z6w

That’s good advice but if you can turn the motor but hand before you even try those things you don’t need to do all that. Yes to the mystery oil down the carb and sucking gas out of a lawn mower can. Also, he’s right ditch that tank and get new lines. All those shit will gum up the carb if it can run.
@shartne

@@danhoyland142 Yes of course but put some Mystery oil down the cylinders before you turn it over. So you dont score up the cylinders. unhook the fuel pump so it dont pump bad gas into the engine.

I'm actually currently restoring a '70 Mustang coupe. If I were you I would absolutely restore this Mach 1 into an every day driver. Nothing concourse, but just a nice cruiser. All-in-All, it looks like you've got a good candidate here for a good at-home DIY restoration. Baby the engine and trans before you try to get it started. Fluids, carb rebuild, Mystery oil in each cylinder, new fuel pump, fuel lines, and fuel tank, then see if it turns over by hand. After that just listen to what it does and go from there.

My first car, purchased in 1973 was a light green metallic 1970 Mach 1 with the deluxe white interior. Drivetrain was the base 351 Windsor 2 BBL with an FMX 3 speed automatic. It was fully loaded with power steering, power brakes (front disc) and AC. I modded the car with Ansen slot mages, 60 series tires, air shocks in the rear, headers with full dual exhaust, an aluminum dual plane intake manifold and a Holley 600 CFM 4 BBL carb. It definitely has a 9 inch Ford Rear end in it. That’s a good thing. I’ll bet the Marty report says it has 3.00 or 3.25 rear end Gears. The front corner of the cylinder head will probably have a number 2 Cast in it signifying it is a two barrel engine. Which means The ports are smaller than four barrel Heads. 4 barrel heads are cast with the number 4 in the top corner Of the cylinder head.Let the restoration begin.

Have to say the body work is likely to be the easy part because you have so many replacement panels available these days. The hard part will be tearing everything down and fitting all the pieces back together. (in the right places) Cleaning and prepping things is also a chore. Do yourself a favor and get several boxes of zip-loc bags and a marker. As you remove a door tag it hinge bolts door sill screws, seat bolts, etc. Put these bags into small boxes marked left side, right side rear, engine, trans, etc. Also take lots of pictures of sub assemblies. On a rainy day you can empty each bag and wire brush for later use. Spray everything with penetrating oil, and re-bag till needed. This will save hours of searching on reassembly. You can thank me later.

Sorry for your loss. My dad passed away last May. 2020 was not a good year! You've got a very cool car there. Yes it is worth restoring!! Classic Mustangs have one of, if not the largest aftermarket support. You can get just about every part you would ever need to rebuild/restore one. The biggest piece of advice I can give you is not to focus on the whole project. Restoring a car is a very big job. Most people tear the car apart get over whelmed by the amount of work and bail on the project. So to keep from getting over whelmed by it. Just focus on doing one thing at a time. And keep working on it. Try to accomplish something on it every week. Even if it's a small job like cleaning a part. Just keep working on it. By doing that eventually it will get finished. Like I said you've got a very cool car there. I can't wait to see what you do with it.

Glad I stumbled upon your videos! The first thing that must be done is to get that Mustang inside, out of the weather. Once that’s done, see if the engine is still free, or if it’s locked-up from sitting... pull the spark plugs, shoot a few ounces of transmission fluid or “Marvel Mystery Oil” into each of the cylinders - do not put the spark plugs back in yet! After you’ve done that, try to spin the crankshaft by hand, using a breaker bar with a socket on the harmonic balancer. The best thing you could do right now is to watch some videos from “junkyard digs” and “thunderhead289”, as they have resurrected quite a few old Ford cars & trucks. Then just remember - take your time, and if there’s something you’re not sure about, ask somebody. Car guys love to share their knowledge with everyone!

First thing you should do: 1) Buy a whole bunch of zip lock bags and keep every piece of hardware you take off it. 2) Label every aforementioned zip lock bag gratuitously. 3) Video EVERYTHING!!! 4) Put the entire car inside a building (if at all possible) and do all work on it slowly and methodically making sure not to cut corners. I applaud you for taking on this challenge and I wish you the best of luck. Keep us updated on all of the progress.

A 70 Mach 1 is one of my favorite cars but you do realize that those 70s Ford trucks are probably more desirable than that mustang right now right? What I’m saying is you have a goldmine of trucks laying around. You could sell 4 or 5 of them and be able to restore that whole mustang. Check out the Hagerty valuation tool, 73-79 Ford trucks have tripled in price since 2016. Anyways good luck, it’s a lot of work but and awesome opportunity.
