A ball carrier is considered ‘down’ when he is touched while being on the ground or falls to the ground as a result of a defending tackle so if you fall on your own you can get up and keep running. This rule does not apply in college football so if the ball carrier touches down the play is dead regardless of being touched. PS. It’s a 53 man roster in the NFL

That’s the rule in the NFL. At the high school and college level you are automatically down whenever any part of your body except the feet or hands touches the ground, even if is the the result of a slip or tripping over your shoelaces.

Craziest Plays in College Football History is a great video. The rules in college football are a little different too btw like only 1 foot has to be down in-bounds for a catch unlike in the NFL where you need two feet.

When they stop the forward momentum the play is done. If the ball holder goes down, but rolls forward he can still jump up and keep running. But if he stops, rolls sideways or backwards, or drops the ball the play is done.

As far as I remember, hurling opponents and one handed catching are somewhat recent developments. They happened in the past, but were not as common. One handing catching gives one more reach, and you can use the other hand to keep balance or ward off a defender.

In most leagues if anything other than the ball carriers hands and feet touches the ground they are considered down and the play ends. In the NFL a player isn't considered down unless either contact with an opposing player caused something other than their hands and feet to touch the ground or an opposing player makes contact with them while something other than their hands and feet touch the ground.

To answer your question at 4:18, in college football when the runner's knee touches the ground for any reason, he is down and the play is over. Even if he just falls down by himself, he would be down. In the NFL, any defender contact that causes the runner to lose balance and eventually fall will still cause the play to be over. In this particular instance, there is enough defender contact that he would be declared down regardless of college or NFL rules. For example at timestamp 6:48, the runner's leg grazes the defender's head. Even there, that's sufficient contact to declare the runner down.

There is a clip of an old school game from back when they wore leather helmets. It's in black and white, and it has a receiver running the entire field and he literally flips over the guys on defense coming at him. He runs right at them, sticks his hand out, pushes their head down, and rolls over them, back to back. He does like 5 in a row before he scores a touchdown. I don't know who it was or even the teams. I can't find the clip either. I saw it years ago on the internet back in like 1999 or something.

One of those rules you were asking about in another video Luka. In college football, once you are down, you cannot get up and run again, even if you have NOT been touched. In the NFL, you CAN get up and run if you fall down but have not been touched. The clip you were watching when the runner fell down was a college video clip. That is why the player stopped after he fell down. He isn't allowed to continue running in college.

In college football, there's no "down by contact", meaning that once you're down, you're down. Whereas in the NFL if you fall to the ground without having been touched first (down by contact), you can get up and keep running.

Old school football is sorta like old school basketball. Where they believed in fundamentals more than the flashy play. So instead of juking and spinning and hurdling, they ducked their heads down and just tried to barrel through defenders to gain yards. Thats why you dont see many hurdles from back then, it just wasnt the way to play.
@kevinb314

Defenders are slightly prone to this, because football players are always taught to get low on tackles. You will especially see this when a smaller defender is trying to tackle someone larger, it happens to corner backs the most.

Try not to think of football as touchdowns but as first downs. That yellow line is a life line to keep the ball in an scoring position. Every time you cross that yellow line and you have 3 more goes at scoring maximum points before you have to give it up to the other team or make a lesser kick for fewer points. That is why a lot of these plays are incredible, just get to the yellow line and your team is still in business.

Most NFL receivers run track in high school and college in addition to playing football and there is a preference among coaches for tall receivers which leads to the hurdling of defenders. You don't see many short guys running hurdles as it is a tall persons race. You usually see this in football when a short defender has to stop a tall receiver. They will try start their tackle low to drive up on the player with the ball. If the defender commits to his tackle too early they can get leap frogged as this video shows. The NFL loves Tall Quarterbacks so they can throw over the huge guys on the offensive line as much as it loves tall receivers. This lets the QB throw the ball high out of the back of the end zone where the receiver has to jump for it and the Cornerbacks and Safetys are not tall enough to get to the ball. There have been many successful short wide receivers in the NFL but most of the all time greats are tall as giraffes, fast as gazelles, and jump like kangaroos. Watch Jerry Rice's carrier highlights. That man was a beast and a half. He used to do all of his off season running in the mountains arranging his routes to be as up hill as possible and he used to wear a belt that was attached to a truck tire that he would drag for extra resistance.

Maybe it varies by division or conference or something, but Ohio State has 105 or 106 on the roster and suits them all for home games (the travelling squad is around 75). Yes, there are duplicate numbers but not on the same squad; in fact two of this season's co-captains both wear #2, one on offense and the other on defense.

Huddles are amazing when they work but in the nfl they are frowned upon because of the likelihood of getting hurt. Also as far as how high they can jump being able 2 jump 2-3feet (2/3-1meter) strait up standing still is normal. When i was in highschool i could jump onto a classroom desk standing still at 5foot 10in (just under 2meters) tall and 240pounds(110kg) and i wasnt the best of athletes.
