That Ned's track was actually released in 1991 and was in HEAVY rotation on MTV's 120 Minutes music showcase for early alternative bands.

I saw Nick Cave perform the Mercy Seat live in the 90’s - incredibly powerful

Mercy Seat is still one of my favourites of Nick's, even after decades of brilliance. Absolutely love this set of songs. Haven't heard the Neddies in years - made me go and dig my old CD out to listen to them. Haven't heard anyone mention Greebo for a while. I'm actually going to see Pop Will Eat Itself and Jesus Jones tonight to get my Greebo on.

I've seen the first 4 bands live!!! Love em all! Nick Cave and The Flaming Lips at Lallapalooza '94. Sonic Youth once at Bumpershoot, and once when they opened for R.E.M. at The Gorge. Ned's Atomic Dustbin I saw twice on their tours for their first 2 albums!

I got to see Sonic Youth many times over the years, and a couple times when they had the amazing Jim O'Rourke as an official band member! I've never seen Nick Cave live, but his album, "The Boatman's Call" is one of my favorite record covers! Great album of music, too!

This is a great dive outside the mainstream. I saw NCave twice and FLips twice, both excellent. But deeper into Sonic Youth, who I saw about 7 times. I recommend their songs w Kim G vox. Sacred Trickster, Tunic, Reena, Jams Run Free, Swimsuit Issue, Kool Thing, Washing Machine, Trouble Girl (w Kim Deal of Pixies & Breeders)

Her bass playing on Teresa's Soundworld reminds me of Joy Division. Who SY definitely was somewhat inspired by. They're very open to music. Git/voc Thurston Moore is a huge collector of DIY, punk, experimental etc.

As soon as Socket (Thinking Fellers Union) started I felt joy thru the song. I had it on a cassette in the 90s but didn't recall that specific title until I heard it and it's so cool. The late 90s I was very into SY and also I recommend Built To Spill's album Perfect From Now On. And the band Mercury Rev was amazing and weird

Ned’s Atomic Dustbin - can’t believe there’s a reaction for them lol loved them back in the day (1990 this came out not 2000). Most interesting thing about these guys is they have two bass players.

Something that's really worth listening to is Johnny Cash's cover version of The Mercy Seat. (I know everyone got really excited about 'Hurt' but, for me, this was the one that should have got the attention.)

Nice marathon. The Flaming Lips put on a great show here in Osaka in 2013, mostly from their lip The Terror; I think that Clouds Taste Metallic - from which Kim’s Watermelon Gun comes from - was their last lp with a strong emphasis on guitar; currently they’re doing their Yoshimi tour - their music from the early 2000s.

Ned's Atomic Dustbin God Fodder is early 90s. I have the vinyl sleeve signed by the entire band! I hear influences of Nirvana Nevermind era and Jane's Addiction in the song. Cut Up ✂️ is a great song by them too. C 22 - 03 - 2024

Nick Cave performing The Mercy Seat live at the piano is quite something. However Johnny Cash made the song his own, like he did with Hurt.

Johnny Cash did with Hurt, but absolutely not with The Mercy Seat. Not even close. Cave OWNS The Mercy Seat, but every live version (esp his Paradiso live version) is the best.

@@TheColdrush22 I’m on the fence with this one. I prefer Nick as an artist overall but something just clicks with Johnny’s arrangement and delivery on this, for me anyway. Could Cash have written this though? No, I don’t think so. There are very few artists who have mastered the art of storytelling and I would include Cave in that short list.

Compelling request Matt and great reaction Nick. Great music requires some effort sometimes and this music is not centered on entertaining the listener as much as moving them.

This whole marathon was in response to when Nick first shared the story of his mother's brush with death and how it affected his spirituality. I'm glad you recognized that Nick
