👌👍like your work, I've been shopping around online for a new rear 29er wheel for my mountain bike, as its a standard 135QR axle, but theres limited upgrades because of the spacing, but found a wheel builder online luckily👍great video👌

Great video! I was looking for weeks to find the answer to this as I did the same, bought a cheap set of Bontragers and fond that the rear was a 142 and wouldn't fit in my frame. Your video gave me the answer. Mine are slightly different , in that the non drive side is a push fit and when you remove it, the axle has 2 holes you can put a small bar through to hold it while you undo the drive side. The process is the same after that. I don't have access to a lathe at the moment, so I found a guy in the local town who can do that for me and I'm taking them down on Monday.

Now you should check with the installed casstte. The cassette is now 3.5 millimeters closer to the frame. You should check that the chain does not hit the frame when it is on the smallest sprocket. If it doesn't hit, congratulations. You've been very lucky.

The wheel centerline was the same between the two hubs so the cassette position didn't change relative to the centerline. It didn't hit. This video is over a year old. I rode that bike all season before using the wheels on another.

Excellent work and great video - how funny just doing this exact thing and bought Fulcrum rapid reds to put on an old MTB frame only to find they are 142 x 12mm and I need 135 x ? thin skewer type 🙄

This hubs have an issue with the bearing cones, if they're too tight the surface get destroyed. Spare parts are not that cheap, you'll probably need the whole axle/cone... so look, that you screw it not too tight 👌 Another issue is the aluminium freehub, I hope it will last a while 😄

For the vision team 30 142x12mm, can i just take out the end caps, insert a 12mm to 9mm qr adapter, and call it a day? The one where you insert a whole shaft inside the thru axle that converts it from 12mm to 9mm?
@RobertAdairWorkshop

I took a quick look at that hub. Since they have the adapter, that should work just fine. You might have to trim the adapter down depending on the thickness of your dropouts.

Wow you posted 3 days ago and today this is the exact thing i searched for, thanks! i don't have a lathe, so planning to hack this together with a belt sander and file lol...slow and careful should still get er done. For the axle you made (other video) - is the same thing available on ebay? just not sure of the measurements needed... I got a killer deal on a wheel set for a frame-up build I'm doing, but the rear hub is 142mm and my bike is 135mm

The axle adapters are available on eBay and Amazon. Search for 135 QR adapter and several will come up. You’ll want one for your through axle size. Regarding converting from 142 to 135, just remove 3.5 mm from each end cap and you’ll be golden. I should mention that they axles are somewhat hard. I'd recommend an angle or bench grinder, though, I have used belt sanders for similar.

@@ui7183 no srry but its pretty simple - just use a grinder of some sort to remove 3.5mm from each side of the axle.

Did you have to modify the brake rotor seat? Why didn't cutting the threaded axle work? It sounds like it would. Luckily, I bought a DT Swiss 135 with boost end caps. I ordered the 142 and a 9mm QR adapter. It fits into my 141 with 2mm washers as spacers. So now I ordered a boost spacer 3mm to replace the washers. However, I still want to explore your method.

My bike (trek 2100 composite) is 130mm dropouts, the wheels I bought are 135mm. Am I never be able to fit them in the bike? I feel sad, I made a rookie mistake and I spent a lot of money on the wheels :(

It seems like there should be, right? It'd be as simple as a different pair of nuts. I keep a spare hub around in case I want to use these wheels with thru axles and the swap takes about 5 minutes. Maybe there just isn't a high demand for that?
@JeanFrancoisDesrosiers

I'm doing this now. But I ordered a Novatec axle (30$) to machine it instead of the original axle. So the wheel now fits either 135 or 142 just by swapping hub + spacers. ... and this is NOT a Novatec hub, just mod the cheapest axle.

Sir, good morning. I like what did, I too have a personal lathe and I wonder if you tried a boost 148mm hub reducing and fitting them to a 135mm dropout? Won't it affect the alignment of the disc brake?I appreciate if you could give me some advice. Thank you...
@RobertAdairWorkshop

I'm not familiar with the 148 hubs but I'd suspect they are too wide to reduce. If the bearing centerline outside dimension is greater than 135, you'd lose your preload hardware.

@jonc5422

No, 135 and 142 hubs have the same hub shell size, which allows it to be used with each other. 148 and 141 also have the same hub shell, and can be used with each other.

If your frame is made out of steel or aluminum, there should be enough flex for the 135 to fit. I've done it without issue. Carbon frames might be too stiff.
