A lot of people say some sentiment of "the hardest Dark Souls game is the first one you play", so I recall playing Dark Souls for the first time, and I think it was the hardest game I have played - at the time. Entirety of Starcraft 2 on Brutal was also pretty, well, Brutal. And currently, Unfair for WOTR, but its not so much hard as it is (or was, before Act 3), time consuming. How did you feel about the difficulty on an Unfair run in WOTR? I think the idea of "not if I can do, but how long will it take me to" applies very nicely to it.

Agreeing with the sentiment entirely that the hardest DS is the first one you play and I also found DS1 to be the hardest of the bunch at release. God looking back I've played some hard games though. Generally the hardest were always the ones with selectable difficulty that intentionally made things unfair when you selected them. Of course, something in my brain does not allow me from choosing easier difficulties, try though I might. It has actually made me appreciate games all the more with a singular vision of difficulty because I don't feel any amount of playtesting will be enough to satisfy everyone, but satisfying your own vision? That you can do as a game developer. I actually think it's a huge reason why the Souls titles are as successful as they are. I recently beat DOS2's honour mode and stomped the game so hard I questioned how anyone thinks it's difficult, but what it really made me wonder is if the game might have had more focus if they just cut the idea completely of having 5 levels of difficulty. The debate continues - I'm all for accessibility in games, but I think it comes at a massive cost to quality.

I can tell you that while i enjoyed the game, i didnt enjoyed it as much as other RPGs or JRPGs. I understand that the game values experimentation tremendously and thus balance does tend towaver. However, i felt that the game tried unfair rules (physical immunity, magical immunity, 1 hit kills etc) so i also had to use unfair rules (summoning=better action economy) & that is always a problematic approach. Do note that i only mentioned simple concepts (physical immunity), because D:OS has even more outlandish tools to break the internal rules (and i am sure D;OS2 does that to an even greater extent.)

Deflecting in Lies of P is very satisfying, but the window is very unforgiving. I genuinely find Sekiro much easier simply to the fact that the deflecting window is much larger. For Lies of P, I don't find it to be necessarily a huge problem against bosses since you can just retry them over and over until you get the timings down, but it's pretty lame against strong mobs, who are so annoying to fight sometimes that it's often just better to ignore them. This with the fact that you take a ton of damage through regular blocks...

I have played Witcher 2 on the hardest difficulty. I also battled with horrible FPS frames, the worst was 10-15 frames whenever i loaded on the Undead field (when collecting the ingredients for the ritual, the Dun Banner etc). I remember i did a lot of rolling and that i was lucky on Witcher 2's superboss, the Imperator (superboss mage with 2 gargoyles underneath Loc Muinne). Somehow i could momentarily heal after i killed a Gargoyle. I remember i was feeling inspired from the training arena & Witcher's intro mission, so i decided i would play hard difficulty, preparing with potions for the encounter. I wouldnt do it in Witcher 3, because its a much bigger game. IMO hard W3 would be easier to beat than hard W2, because the open world can make you tackle the problems at your pace. In a sense, that also is true with W2 but there are just not that many leveling options or options for armor as opposed to W3.

I want to 100% it like I did for Lies of P and Lords of the Fallen, but there are also so many other games that I want to play (Diablo 4, Lunacid, Last Faith, etc.) I'm afraid that if I move-on, I won't have the motivation to come back.

It also helps that Styg (dev) gave up and put the automap in the game. Imagine playing old version and getting lost in the dark tunnels with no map... Apparently Age of Decadence is not that difficulty? Succesful speech checks ain't win buttons there... Wonder how you can handle older Wizardry games - not just those on sales (Steam/GOG) but also Wizardry 4 , which is one of the hardest RPGs in the history.

So i'm guessing for Wizardry games, Mortym would use the knowledge of those others before him, the ones that found what is the optimal party composition. Other than that, if Wizardry 4 would be released today, it would be down to the achievements available. Probably Wizardry wouldnt have many hard achievements, due to the nature of the game (its already hard or rather your party can get wiped, thus the possibility of failure). So not many hard achievemenets, unless they wanted a timesink, like many roguelikes do.

Lies of P broke me. I was enjoying the game for the first 1/2 and the 2nd half got so bull**** that i just lost all enjoyment in playing it. The last boss I gave up on and i never give up on games. I have played about every Souls-like to come out the last few years and I need a break. All of these developers think that bull**** difficulty is the way to imitate DS, and I'm so tired of it, specifically as you stated in the parrying department. After Sekiro every Souls-like now has to have a parrying mechanic where you have 5,000th/second window to parry or you take major damage. I have no idea why anyyone thinks this is fun. What made DS popular (among many other things) waa it gave you multiple ways to appraoch combat. If you wanted to parry, you could parry, if you wanted to roll/dodge, you could do that, if you wanted ranged combat, you could do that too...not so much with all of these Souls-likes nowadays that are more concerned with "difficulty" than with fun combat or mechanics that make sense. The over emphasis on parrying isnt the only problem, but it's one of them. Im burned out.

Playing other Soulslike imitators kinda makes one realise that the Soulslike games at their core are true RPGs, really having many options to approach combat. As a no consumables on the first run flaggelant the Lies of P second Brotherhood fight made me miserable. I was just sick to death of the relatively long first phase to repeat before getting clapped by Big Bro's flailing. I found the later ones a bit easier to learn without having to mentally transition from a gank fight to a duel. NG + spamming throwables made everything a lot easier though.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. There are people who can No Hit this game. I am not one of them. For me, it's literally impossible, after many hours I had to surrender. If you are not, pretty much amazing at Souls Parrying... I would not recommend this game, which is a shame. If not for the silly level of difficulty, it really is an incredible world to see and learn about.

I think there is a rhythm feeling to the combat. Many people have said that Sekiro has 'clicked' after they figured that out.

i feel like underrail is poorly balanced and simply doesn't give the player enough information more than anything. i mean, there's literally no way for a new player to know which skills are actually good choices or not. there's no "skill" involved, it's just trial and error until you have enough information to figure out how they actually wanted you to build your character. either that or just look up build guides to understand how the game works. either way its simply not enjoyable for most people. also mfw games cap your success chance at 95% because the devs hate everyone who plays their game i guess.

I hated Lies of P entirely because of the perfect block/parry system being so important. I can parry pretty well in Fromsoft games but I found the timing in Lies of P incredibly difficult to nail and I lost interest very fast

I beat the game while still sucking at perfect block. You just can perfect block the most dangerous attacks. Dodge is a thing in the game too

The awesome thing is the longer you play the more powerful you become not just with level upgrades. Eventually you'll have 5 amulet slots, the ability to *normal* block fury(red) attacks and an amulet which allows you to dodge fury attacks. I just finished NG+ and this is by far my favorite non FromSoft Soulslike.

@@KrazyKrzysztof Wait until ng+2, they went absolutely off the rails with the damage and health scaling. Parade master is a drag even if you do the fight perfect, and it only gets worse.

Read this once on a forum many years ago on difficulty: "This boss sucks, way to overpowered, it took me 20 tries to defeat him" vs "This boss sucks, way to easy, it took me only 20 tries to defeat him"

I almost completed underrail with a spear wielding tanky build, except the last boss killed me so many times that I gave up. I recognised that the spirit of underrail is such, that losing at the end boss was fair. Even expected, and patted myself on the back for creating a very unorthodox build that came very far.
