iNonentity More then likely it was just a bad batch of paste as it is just a few specific chips that suffer from this problem. Intel can control the quality of the chips themselves.. But they don't control the quality of the paste delivered to them in bulk.
@SilvaDreams

iNonentity They do check the chips themselves, though it's not like they give them the massive run through we eventually do, plus it could be inconsistencies in the paste itself thus why some people never have this issue yet others do.

I don't understand the critics here. The guy is showing us that if you're careful, you CAN remove the heat spreader and NOT hurt the processor. Furthermore, he's PROVING that Intel is putting poor TIM on their processors. The shit that Intel puts on the chip runs hotter than the stuff he used on the coolest running cores! He got a 5 degree drop in temps on those coolest cores, not to mention fixing the disparity of the stock temps. Now all the cores are running the same 5 degrees cooler than Intel is giving us. This kid should be getting a medal from us, not criticism. RMA? Since he proved to us Intel has a quality control problem, AND that they're using cheap-ass TIM, why would you roll the dice with another processor and maybe wind up with something worse? If you CAN do this, why wouldn't you, especially since you'll wind up with something better than the best quality processor that Intel can give you? You guys criticizing him must be Intel worshipers, not just fan boys. He's offended you by showing you your god is flawed.

@TheUniversalEyes
8 жыл бұрын
You should have put the heat spreader back on properly, you use RTV sealant, which is silicon and is what Intel used to begin with. It can handle temps far greater than any cpu will create. In fact, if anyone is reading this, make sure you wash your hands before doing this, don't touch the pins or pad on your cpu, make sure you are grounded, use a new razor blade for removing the cpu heat spreader, completely clean both surfaces with 99% alcohol, remove the old silicon sealant, replace with rtv sealant (it's typically black) and use a quality thermal compound, preferably not crap mx-2, nowadays there is better out there. Once you get it all ready to go, apply the rtv then set something heavy on top of it (like a book or clothing iron) and let the rtv cure for about 6 hours, the longer the better. Just make sure whatever you set the cpu on is extremely clean. a sheet of glass would be best.

I still have my beast of a CPU, 10 years later. It's a Core i7 3770K that ran 10 years OCed to 4,2~4,3 GHz without any trouble. I never got past 75~80°C even with intensive loads. And this last month, I had overheating issues, where I reached almost easily 85~90°C in any task, even after reverting back to full stock frequencies/voltages. Meanwhile, I touch my cooler (Noctua NH-D15) to check the temps and it never gets really hot. I'd say it's just about 30~40°C, while the CPU is clearly boiling. I've changed my thermal paste with some good fresh recently bought Thermal Grizzly, re-done it a few times (in case I screwed up application), but still the same overheating issues. Your video is gonna help me a lot, cause I don't see any other cause right now than the internal thermal paste for the problem that I have. I'll try to delid it. I hope it will solve this ^^. I cant believe this. Are you seriously telling me Intel, one of the biggest IC manufacturers in the world spend millions on R&D and sell CPUs for 100's of £/$ And then cheap out on 3 cm of thermal paste? Seriously? And this has a huge impact on CPU running Temps. Sounds bonkers
@anhedoniac6390

If they didn't do this, how do they expect to sell the next version of CPU's? Imagine someone created and unbreakable tool that never dull, blunts or breaks. If ten people want this tool, he only sells 10. However, if he makes it slightly worse, he can sell it 10 times, over and over again. He might even slightly upgrade it each time to give them incentive to buy it again.
@SupremeGamingStyle

To keep the business running they purposely make theire products fail after a certain amount of time, 5-10 years max. With proper thermal compound or cpus would last 20-30 years, the fact that they would be completely outdated and couldn't run a latest wordpad is irrelevant. I'm not just talking about intel, a lot of companies do it, it's their policy ahahah lol.

SupremeGamingStyle Companies like Intel don't "purposefully design their products to fail", they design them to have a maximum MTBF. There's no reason to have a MTBF of 20+ years for a product that may be irrelevant within 5.
@SupremeGamingStyle
10 жыл бұрын
Theo Lubbe That's capitalism for ya. I still have a computer from 2004 which runs fine, when intel and nvidia parts fried, changed them to amd, still runs to this day, some people even use pcs as old as 1999~, it's not about being irrelevant, it's about making a product that will last u so long, you'll buy a new one when it becomes obsolete to you, and not break down in 2-5 years which is what intel wants, to push their chips. AMD is trying to take the crown by making their cpu's last, cards are just as good as far as peoples reviews go.

@IZylusI

My theory is that the die is very fragile, and the copper heatspreader reduces actual pressure by distributing the load on the PCB instead of the die when tightening on a heatsink, and it does what its name implies... Spreads the heat evenly to take away heat from the center before transferring it over to the heatsink.
@ChrisKadaver
7 жыл бұрын
Ah okey. So you think the pressure from the cooler directly attached to the die actually could wreck your cpu?! When it comes to cooling performance you would probably be better of without the heatspreader anyway. The heat would spread even better with the heatsink directly attached to the die I think.

WhiteFireDragon what would you suggest would be the best Thermal paste for in-between the processor heat sink and the little chip inside ,as well as recommendations for between the cooling unit and the heat sink? i'm looking at doing a couple projects of my own,planning to possibly break a world record one day hahah maybe ,but i'm looking for high quality paste for a very intuitive thermal build .

Edit: Okay I think I might do it now but this way =Oo2aFZBBJF4 , it was way to fast and he used a freaking card board on the rest of the PCB like 97% of it on card holy! :D no risk of scratch! This is really making me wanna go pull out my 4670k and replace the TIM..... At the same time kind of scary to razor blade it and scratch the green pcb lol. Been trying to OC to 4.4 but the heat is just way too much. Even in stock + turbo Boost it goes to like 75-83+ on P95 more on IBT with air cooling :x I wished I had a Vice.....! Whats really annoying is that Intel's asking price for the high end i5 or i7 are too much. The least they could do is put a high end TIM on it or just use Fluxless solder like the Sandy's had....
@anub1s15

yea have the same thought. my 4670 is running stock and the temps are bonkers, i have my gpu and cpu in the same liquid cooling loop cpu running stock and gpu 33% oc, the gpu tops out at 65 degree's the cpu hits 88 after 30 min of prime 95 and hits 60-70 degree's wile gaming(not to high but imo way to frickin high for stock on liquid). time to get naked mounting and delid this sucker... once i have enough saved up to buy another in case i bork the operation :P
@T.K.9
10 жыл бұрын
anub1s15 its doable :) I did mine using the same way but it took me longer to get an insertion point using a thin hard razor not the bendy one's. After that inserted a plastic card board then pulled off the rest of the epoxy, no risk of scratching the pcb at all, just don't go to far inside where the Die is situated. But the key I think is Taking your time so no massive headache at the end xD For better results you can also go and direct mount your liquid water block (EK seem to sell fixings for direct mounting) or with heat sinks but beware there will be a risk of cracking Die if you over tighten screws or if you use a heavy tower heat sink. And I dont recommend the use of liquid team or stuff like IC Diamond as they kinda react to the Die and crack it. I saw 2 chips that died and crack and users applied IC Diamond TIM. You could still use them for really good performance like CLU from coollaboratory but use it at your own risk. Either than that it really kills alot of temps, specially using those liquid metal TIM's.

I wouldn't do it anyway, the poor heat dispersion problem only seems to affect the Ivy bridge and pre-devils canyon Haswell CPU's, I have 3 devils Canyon CPU's, a G3258, an i5 4690K and a 4790k, all can be overclocked past 4.6ghz and the highest temp I've seen on any of them was 85°c on a burn in test at 4.9ghz and that was the 4790K, and that was on a 44°c day when my room A/C was off line for a regas, normally I have it at 4.8ghz and it doesn't see the high side of 60°c under load on the hottest core, I have heard of 6700K's hitting 5.1ghz with about the same temps, none of them have ever been de-lidded..
