Mask Service Unit 1 is one of 3 staffed units. Each MSU is staffed by 1 Full time Firefighter. Daily each MSU Truck splits the city up to drop of cylinders to about 70 Depot Stations. The FDNY uses Scott 4.5 positive pressure masks in 60, 45, 30 and 15 minute versions... Each Depot holds about 40 bottles. Daily from 0830 to 1400 they are exchanging used cylinders and replacing them at the Depots. MSUs are assigned on 3rd Alarms, 2nd Alarm 10-77s, 10-76 Commercial High Rise Fires and may be special called citywide and may be special called to fill a depot as some areas of the city can have 3 fires in one day. Depot Stations are so if a Company is out of bottles they go to Depot to get new bottles. Mask Service Division is in charge by a Battalion Chief also known as Car 12M. Each Tour gets assigned a Officer & 3 Firefighters. The 3 Firefighters will be on the Trucks and the officer is at the desk to answer phone and to see who needs bottles and masks. During the day shift anywhere from 6-10 light duty firefighters work in the Mask Service Division to help fill bottles. Not just the bottles that are coming back from the trucks but they also have to fill bottles that are used at The Rock which is the FDNY Training Academy. They have the probies, rescue, hazmat schools. They have companies that train at the academy daily. In the same building they have 7 employees that work for Scott that work on issues with Masks and Cylinders. Cylinders are only good for 15 years and they have to be inspected every 3-5 years
The Mask Service Division utilizes 3 Sprinter Vans 2 of them have the capability to hold air cylinders. The white sprinter van can hold up to 130 bottles. The red one under 80. The 3rd one is empty so if they have to pick up masks and packs or drop them off. Each Battalion and Division have extra Masks and Packs. The White Sprinter Van is usually used for Manhattan as it’s easier then using a Big Truck.
Basically after a Fire companies in the battalion go to the Depot to exchange cylinders.
For Response to scenes basically if MSU 1 was doing depots in Queens then he would take any fires or incidents in queens.
