FDNY Rebreather Drill designed to exercise the capabilities as a Rebreather Task Force. The scenario is a tunnel collapse with multiple victims. Caused by whatever reason it may be explosion, earthquake or even a attack. The FDNY has to be ready for any kind of scenario as its the biggest city in the world. Addition to that they had the Marines from CBIRF join the FDNY at the drill. FDNY has Rebreather Drills 2 times a year. There is only 2 Major Fire Departments in the US that have Rebreathers and that's FDNY & LAFD.
The Rebreather Drill was done this time at the East New York Rail Tunnel. This tunnel used by New York & Atlantic for rail freight services to and from Brooklyn. The Tunnel is approx. 3,600 feet long so it's ideal for training.
The exercise consists of a Platform Collapse, Breaching Steel & Concrete, Train Derailment, victims under trains, Hazmat scenario, Multiple Car Pile up with numerous victims. There is 3 Tunnels simulated for Long Island Rail Road, Subway and Long Island Expressway. NYC has may tunnels throughout that can be affected.
In this drill you will see members from Rescues, Squads, FDNY EMS Rescue Medics & Hazmat Tac and Marines from CBIRF.
A Rebreather is a breathing apparatus that absorbs the CO2 of a users exhaled breath to permit the recycling of the substantially unused oxygen content. Oxygen is added to replenish the amount metabolized by the user. The Ice Block is used to keep the air cool while operating.
Rebreather Unit 1 is staffed by 2 Rebreather Trained Firefighters that respond from Ladder 20 quarters in Manhattan. They cover all 5 boroughs 365 / 24/7
Rebreather Unit 2 is a Reserve rig kept fully stocked at Rebreather Operations Headquarters at Fort Totten Queens where the Rebreathers are checked daily and tested. Rebreather Unit 2 can be staffed during the day tour and respond as needed. Rebreather Unit is assigned on major incidents for collapses, train derailments, confined space, ship board incidents and any incident a incident commander requests it. A Common reason it's used is for High CO in High Rise Buildings in Sub cellars as they would be out of air quick with a regular 45 or 60 minute SCBA Cylinder. Same goes for a incident in a tunnel. Must tunnels have fans to pull the smoke or CO2 out like the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels.
