This is a good exercise. After 30 years of gaming and programming my brain to know where the reticle is pointing is where I'm going, it's difficult to create that disconnect. Especially with HOTAS where my brain wants to yaw and or spin and pull up, yet I have to remember to use horizontal thrusters instead. Work in progress.

It helps to think of it as a zero G FPS rather than a flight sim, where you can circle strafe targets and stuff like in an FPS.

I’ll typically toggle between FA on/off especially during turns. It’s very useful when I can drift my corvette like it was a smaller ship. I’ve been flying my new Krait MkII and using FA off when turning/ orbiting an NPC makes a huge difference, instead of making quick passes like a WWII dog fight.

Great tutorial man. I've recently returned to the game after a very long break. Had about 850 hours into ED when I originally left, all with KB+M, including tons of PvP. At best I would toggle FA-Off in combat, but never went full FA-Off. You're tutorial not only inspired me to re-learn learn FA-Off, but to also investigate if I want to invest in a HOTAS or HOSAS. Never took the plunge because I was worried I wouldn't like it and end up wasting money. This makes it seem like there's great potential for fun with a HOTAS/HOSAS setup. I'll been keeping an eye out for your follow-on videos. Keep up the good work. Also, and HOTAS/HOSAS recommendations? I've looked at the X52 Pro before, but I'm not well educated on HOTAS/HOSAS setups.

I am also learning with a new setup: hosas + rudder. No twist; vertical + lateral thrust left hand, pitch + roll right, yaw legs, forward/back feet (toebrakes). I had started on pure hosas, so the muscle memory has been tricky to overcome.

@@zh4ngx I've actually been practicing FA-OFF by hunting Thargoids. Great way to practice with notable negatives if you mess up. I now fly completely FA-OFF in combat, only rarely turning FA-ON if I want to be lazy about coming to a complete stop after an encounter. I still use FA-ON when flying in and out of stations, etc, just for now. I gotta say, though, relative mouse is a double edged sword. It's an absolute necessity for FA-OFF, but a significant headache for super cruise or normal FA-ON. I have no idea why FDev haven't included a toggle or setting that enables relative mouse in FA-OFF and disables it for FA-ON.

Thanks so much for this. Really helpful! Do you use joystick curves or similar software to set your axis sensitivity? If so, do you have recommended settings for FA Off?

No. I run completely direct control. I like it better that way, it feels more connected. Now if you're trying to land some PA shots, it might make sense to use an Expo curve.

My big issue with FA-off is the whole flying backwards and being able to get the speed to go forward instead of back from there. Especially in dog-fights. When I boost, overshooting is a problem. I'm now playing this game on PS4 instead of PC and I haven't tried FA-off yet....but it's probably a nightmare. Really awesome flying, though, man.

Nice video mate! I've tried and tried all these years, but nope, I am completely useless. I guess there is no future for me in PvP in this game, unless I am in a wing. It's so frustrating because everybody seems to be good at it, or even able to maneuvre decently. I just can't (dual sticks controller here too). Anyway, a really nice video.

Hmm im using the same controller as you bit i have the complete package (originally got it for flight sims) so i have to use the tiny secondary joystick on the throttle lever for translational. This will probs tale some time to get used to. Especially forward and backwards is difficult cause i essentially have to hit thrust reverse every time

Getting back into the game after a 2-3 year hiatus. Really wanting to get good at this since I really can't fly. I'm guessing it's better to learn in an agile ship, then transfer that knowledge to bigger ships. How much even transfers? Seems like every ship would be unique enough that the timing would take time to learn.

Still learning to make FA off work with a PS4 controller. Had to change my controlls a little, for now I had to sacrifice Yaw if I want lateral thrust, roll and pitch (Not enough buttons and just happen to use Yaw the least) So far thinking ill have an alternate control scheme with no roll, to switch to hotkey toggle during FA off moments. Thoughts anyone? I'm not buying a different controller so just trying to make it work.

Please. I'm curious about your vertical thrust. Is that set to the thumb hat?
@lsswappedcessna
4 ай бұрын
@@Batsu2005I'm thinking this is how you'd do it on either a HOTAS or twin stick. A mid-high range HOTAS like the Logitech G X56 or a mid range HOTAS like the Thrustmaster T16000M has a thumb hat on both the stick and the throttle as well as a lot of easily positioned switches to bind extra things to (i.e. flares, heatsinks, SCBs and chaff). Of course the throttle only controls throttle, but ED does have the alternate flight controls mode, theoretically you could set throttle to up/down and have the thumb hat do forward backwards etc. The potential is limitless when you're using the proper control setup for the game's genre.

in a sense yep. FA on computer uses your thrusters to direct your ship based on current inputs; no input = stop. Off is "Full Newtonian" IE if you go forward you will keep going forward until you give it enough force to stop.

Hopefully you have figured it out, but just in case you havn't. In the ship control settings, you can choose to either hold or toggle for FAO. You just need to click on the little "+" under the option to map Flight Assist. Then you'll be sorted.
