The Seminole tribe started in Gilchrist and Dixie and Levy Counties. The Calusa tribes from Florida and the Creek tribes from Georgia merged renamed the tribe Seminole. There was a big encampment in Dixie County just across the Suwannee River where the Suwannee Gables motel is today. The Seminole tribe territory was from Tallahassee south . Andrew Jackson came in and drove them to Micanopy area then south to Okeechobee and eventually into the Everglades. On Horseshoe Beach highway in Dixie County theres a smal park on the eastside of the road with a small freshwater sink. It's called Jackson's Waterhole. Its where Jackson and his troops camped before the raid on the Seminole's. Thanks for your video brinking back the history of Florida.

Interesting. I never heard this info, and I grew up in Chiefland, Florida. It was said that Chiefland got it’s name because it was the place that all the chiefs met together in counsel. Not sure that’s true or just a story, but it does track with your history.

It was bad enough that millions of Native Americans were moved from their lands and put on reservations, but then many were taken from their reservations and put into what was called Indian Boarding Schools. There the boy's long hair was cut, given Christian names, and forbidden to speak or write their native language or have anything to do with their culture. I interviewed a Native American lady today whose parents were in one of those schools and she herself attended one for a couple of years. Sadly, some of those were abused and lost their lives and were buried on site with no markers. Never again...

It makes me sick to know that my/our ancestors could be so cruel. 😢 Thank you for reading those plaques and telling of what was done to the Seminole people. Stay safe, and God bless 🙏

I stopped by the Desert Inn a few years ago on a road trip, and I’m glad I got to see it before the accident happened. I’m impressed by how much remains and surprised nothing has been done with it yet. It’s sad to see it in that state. Okeechobee looks like a cool town. I wish I would have known it had so much interesting stuff when I was in the area, I would have checked it out. I guess I’ll have to do a return visit. Enjoyed the video and I’m glad to hear about the history which I didn’t know before.

Love watching your videos, Jay but please don’t listen to rumors. As a history buff, I’m a stickler for facts. The Desert Inn was never known as a brothel, that was just something started as a rumor that escalated. It is said that sometimes men would go upstairs with waitresses that they became affectionate with, and engage in relations, but it was never a brothel. Many of the artifacts have been removed by the Osceola county historical Society. A lot of items have also been stolen, and as you recorded vandalized. The building is no longer owned by the historical society. But it will not be rebuilt. The historical marker was stolen about a year after the truck destroyed this historic site. Please don’t take this as criticism love following you you remind me of a young version of The Woo.

Had a work truck break down on us at Yeehaw Junction in 1996. And, the Tampa based company at the time wouldn't get someone to pick me and the other worker up. They said they would have a mobile mechanic come out and get us going. He came and said parts for the diesel engine would have to be ordered before he could repair it. So we stayed 5 days there. Eating, sleeping, and hanging out there. And it wasn't cheap either. 1 night, a girl came in hanging out. She talked with the woman who ran the place, as we had, I believe 3 days and nights to that point. Rented a room. The next morning, I wake and step out of the room. The other worker was out talking to the woman who ran the place. Then I looked more to the right, and a police car was there. I asked what happened. And the woman said the girl called the police saying we were trying to break into the room. And, the officer went into the room, and the window was broken outward, the woman said. So they arrested the girl for breaking the window and making up BS to try and get innocent guys in trouble. Had a life of crap like that. There's definitely lots of Crazy people. 😜 Used to go down to Okeechobee and fish. Used to stay in a timeshare southwest of the city of Okeechobee. I miss that life! I don't know why doctors won't do spine surgeries on me. 😫

The Desert Inn was functioning on and off over the last couple of decades until the final owners closed it down in July, 2018. Osceola County was debating about whether to refurbish it or not given it's historical status. They began some work on it over the next year. Alas, in December of 2019, an out-of-control tractor trailer rig slammed into the front of the main building, effectively destroying it,. The only good news is that the historical society had removed a lot of the furnishings and artifacts in preparation of refurbishment of the building. So they'll most likely end up in museums.

Oh wow! The desert in sounds so violent, and I can't believe the buildings are just abandoned. They're in such a great location right by the busy road. What a shame those modern buildings are just sitting there. I mean, it would only take a half a million to bring it up to code, or maybe, that's why they're. Naaa. I'm just amazed how it's so quiet and hardly any traffic, in the country. Which will be built out by 2035. What a find, out in the middle of nowhere. What a great clip you put together.
