I’ve been watching your vids for some time. I’m a keeper with 10 hives. I love your videos. Finding these beginning vids is cool but I have to admit, I can’t watch this video without imagining that I’m watching Michael Scott put together a flow hive 😂😂😂 it’s never occurred to me until this moment. Looks and voice are spot on. I happened across a first supporter flow hive in a whole lot of stuff last winter for cheap and have it out now. My nucs are still working hard and I can’t wait to try the flow feature for the first time!

I've heard it before and never quite saw it, but I think my natural awkwardness was coming through on these early videos. I had no idea what I was doing and that makes for a good unintentional, cringey Steve Carrell impression. Ha ha...

Thanks for the video. I would like to keep bees someday and I am enjoying learning with you. The flow hive seems pretty expensive. Do you feel satisfied with your investment, now that you've been doing this for a few months?
@vinofarm
8 жыл бұрын
I'm glad I got it. It was more expensive, but I feel like the community that has sprung up because of it has been amazing and the cost was not prohibitive to me personally. The difference in a traditional hive and the flow hive is probably a couple hundred dollars when all is said and done. The drawback is that up until now, I'm doing everything I would be doing if I was a regular beekeeper and it's looking like I won't even get the flow frames on this season. I didn't expect a significant harvest the first year, but I thought I'd at least get the flow frames working. My main goal is a strong hive that survives winter. I think I'll have that. But I would have had that with a regular hive too. Someday I'll get the flow frames on and I'm sure it'll be great. But it will be a while. My opinion is that this system is not going to be useful for a brand new hive in a place with long winters. Probably great for an established hive or a new hive in a more temperate climate.

First of your vids I saw were the ones ahead, depicting the "Fail" and a week later looking at the recovery. I've never kept bees but had a friend a few years back who shared a bit... found it fascinating, and would like to myself someday. Want to say...your genuine manner, honesty & humility in sharing all the basic details got me to subscribe, start from the beginning and look forward to following your learning process! Please make sure you continue to explain it "as if we were 5yr olds", because many of us are at that level of information, so nothing is too simplistic to cover! Thanks so much for doing these vids and good luck on what's to come!

I am in the same boat here, seen the "Fail" video (something I would of done too just from being nosey of the bees) but that video got me watching another and another, so I am starting from the beginning and watching them in order now. I have to admit that it has me thinking about starting my own hive now, learned a bit from the few videos I have seen about bees and I am wanting to learn more now, this is a BIG thing for me since I have never liked bees/wasp/hornets, etc, before.... sorta like my saying about snakes, the only good snake is a dead snake.... same with things that sting me... but now I am looking forward to what else I can learn from Vino Farm, keep up the great work, and I will catch up with your newest videos soon.

Another great video - putting the brood frames together looks extremely fiddly and frustrating. Is there a reason for nails rather than screws? This next comment is a bit out of place in the order of your video's, but I have seen other comments where they say that the hives have been installed in garden sheds, where the bulk of the hive is outside, with just the honey access area side fitted into the shed (much like a window), so that you can go into the shed and collect the honey without bees flying all around you. Especially handy/useful if they have several or more hives and are collecting honey from 3 hives at same time.

I'm learning that the ideal fastener for frames is staples. I need to get a pneumatic stapler. Or just buy the frames already assembled. I just made this video because it was the way the Flow Hive folks told us to do it. I realized after one frame that there had to be a better way. I have seen bee huts/sheds that you are talking about and it is a great solution for several hives. I'm not on that scale yet. Maybe someday!

New subscriber, I've binge watched all of your beehive videos, very interesting. Another guy I watched with the flow hive had his bees eating the wood from the inside of the section where the flip down arm is, getting in between the box frame and those honeycomb panels where they weren't supposed to be able to get into while the honey is flowing out. The bees were in the small sliver section and the arched bottom section as soon as he removed the wood there to check. I just wanted to mention this issue to you so you could look out for it and perhaps there's something you could mount on the back side of the upper and lower sections so the bees can't eat the wood, plexiglass or some other material, perhaps? Your queen seems to be very happy with her hive and the workers are going gangbusters for only being an established hive for a month. I think you're going to have a very productive hive and I'm looking forward to seeing the progress. Thanks for your videos, I've always loved bees and your videos are very interesting to me and I'm sure many others will be watching them in the future.

Someone gave me ten brood Boxes and about twenty half supers with bottom boards, the works. The thing is they are older hives and as I have seen on a lot of videos from different folks they have to space the frames by sight. The ones I were given have metal spacers inside the box so you do not have to space the frames by sight. The person that used them said they never had any problems with bees building from frame to frame making it difficult to manage. I am so stoked I can barely sit still.

@vinofarm

Having two hives is good for a beginner, but it is not necessary. It allows you to compare what's going on in each hive so you can observe what's 'normal' and what might be unusual. It also gives you a backup in case something happens to one hive. But again, it's not essential. I did my first summer with one hive and then inherited two more in October. It was very educational to have my hands in more than one hive. As far as the Flow hive, I would say if you live in a place with long winters, you may just want to get through your first year with traditional hives. You can always add a Flow super on later. I don't see an advantage to buying the entire setup at the beginning. I didn't even get my flow frames on the first year. I was just building the hive and letting the bees store what they needed for winter. If you live in a hot climate with little or no winter, I think the Flow Hive would be used more and might be a good investment. Either way, starting with traditional hives the first year is a good way to go.

oh, and for future reference... wood staples work a lot better. thinner, so they dont split the wood as much and they hold pretty good. once these are in the hive and the bees get at the frame, they weld the thing together.
@vinofarm
7 жыл бұрын
I know. I need to get a pneumatic stapler. I also realized on my scale, it's easier to just buy pre-made frames!
@EvilSl0th
7 жыл бұрын
pre made frames can actually be more work. they often come and they arent square. i recomend making your own as you are, but i would also recommend plastic foundation. it will fix a lot of your frame issues that you have currently. some frames being wider and such. once you are rolling with a second fresh hive, perhaps you could try starting them on plastic to see the difference. my father switched and has never been happier. his old extractor blew apart the odd frame, lol.
