Traveling along a favorite backcountry route I howled up some wolves with their pups from a rendezvous site. There were five pups altogether. Look closely in the video and you can see all of them the next day. At the end of the video one pup decides to scamper out on his own but quickly heads back to the rest of the pups. At about 0.23 you can hear the pups fighting amongst themselves. Probably over meat that the adults had brought to them earlier. No adults were noticeable the next day and were either hiding out of view of me or off hunting.
Wolves in the Western Hemisphere generally breed in February. There is a 63 day gestation period, then pups are born in April. Wolf pups are weened in about six weeks. Once the pups are weened, they are put in a rendezvous site. The adults go off and hunt. When the adults return, the wolf pups nuzzle the noses of the adults. When this happens, the adults regurgitate food they have killed for the pups to eat. The pups begin to grow rapidly as a result of this meat eating. By November or December it is hard to tell the difference in the pups size from the adults.
