There are two basic types of snares. One is the free standing snare or stand alone snare and the other is a snare which uses a snare pole to support it. Both have their advantages. The free standing or stand alone snare is light weight and easy to carry. They use a heavy gauge wire such as #9 to support them and hold them tight once a target animal activates the snare. You need some type of stationary object such as a tree to support it. You can generally carry allot of them in your pack without the added weight of the snare pole. The snare using a snare pole supports itself. You can set it up anywhere without the use of tree or stationary object in which to attach it to as in the stand alone snare. In other words you can set this snare up in an area devoid of any trees or stationary objects.
