I'd like to say that I love your easy-going demeanor. I think of shaving as a relaxing event to be savored. And your smooth cadence just fits right in with that. However, I will also say that I've shaved like that for a few years, and was fine until I started to try the sharper blades like Feather and Treet. I was nicking myself regularly. Then I saw a vid from Michael Freedberg that mentioned starting parallel (instead of perpendicular) and then increasing the angle slowly until you feel it cutting. I tried it and got great results. My nicks have almost stopped. I've gotten very few over the last few weeks, since switching methods. And my shaves have gotten much closer. It may all be about skin type. And I'm sure that YMMV applies here, too. But I thought I'd mention it for your viewers benefit. Maybe they would like to try both ways. Keep up the good work! I've watched several of your videos. They've been very helpful.

+sgrdddy Hello. Thank you, very much indeed, for your comment. I'm like you; I like to relax and focus on me, during my shave. I'm glad you mentioned a different way of getting the correct angle. When I started out, it obsessed me so I'm sure your comment will be very useful. In fact, I was thinking about this, just the other day, and wondering whether to do another video, highlighting both methods. Take care.

That's excellent. Thank you for letting me know. Remember not to press the razor against your face too. It took me a while to get it right. I'm glad I helped a bit. Cheers. 😃👍

Hey, thank you. This is a great comment to read 😃 Well, the videos help me, and I enjoy making them but it's brilliant to know that people, like yourself, are benefitting from them; it's really gratifying. Enjoy your shaves. 😃👍 Take care, and thanks again.

Welcome Mark. It is obvious you enjoy making them. It is a good thing so many share as you do. A help with shaving yes, but so much more. That video of your grandfather in the war was very moving and a great reminder for all of us. I'm very moved.

Great video sir, very interesting about the angle, I have recently started DE shaving and was simply using the same angle as I would have with a cartridge razor.

This is grate advice, I have recently started shaving using a high quality safety razor & soap and it’s attacking my under chin & neck when I try going against the grain, having the angle wrong makes perfect sense. Cheers again for the advice! 👍🏻

Hi Jesse. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, there is a Sunday sit-down video about avoiding irritation that you also might like to check out. Some guys are too sensitive to go against the grain but I'm sure you'll work it out. All the best 👍

Thank you so much for this! I just started with a double edge safety razor and after the first few shaves, I ended up with some razor burn on my neck! Hopefully this helps me avoid it! Cheers!

Hello 🙂 When I started, I could only go with the grain, mostly downwards, on my neck. I had such bad razor burn! It's worth bearing in mind that some people can't shave against the grain on their neck. The best advice I can give is to NOT press on the razor, keep it light and try short strokes on the neck, rather than long strokes; it helps you adjust the angle of the razor to take into account the curve in the neck. Maybe this will help you out. All the best 👍

I can see the logic, and it's true my first shaves with a DE have been horrible tugfests so far because I've been trying to use the same angle I was using before with the disposable, but there's still something unsatisfying about this being the 'proper' technique: it would make all manufacturers seem wrong in choosing to put those comb-like grooves or teeth on the base plate, which with 'proper' technique shouldn't even be touching your face when you're just starting out, making the comb useless. By this logic beginner razors should have a comb-like edge on the *top cap* , not the base plate. The comb design thing, in addition to old habits, also makes newcomers try to start from base plate contact and move up, not top cap contact and move down.

Hi. Thanks for commenting and sharing your experience. I can certainly see that you have have a valid point. This is just what worked really well for me. There are different blade exposures on different razors so it is likely that the comb or safety bar, was just at the right angle to touch my skin. It's more of a general guide. Quite a few fellows have found it useful but each to there own. I hope you come along quickly and enjoy your shaves. All the best.

@@FriendshipShaving 4th DE shave today went great (finally!), but I can't tell why because I changed the razor, the blade and the soap vs. last time. Technique-wise I tried the top-down thing at first but quickly found that I could do any angle I wanted and it was fine, as long as the blade engaged. So my tugging problem must've been from the razor, blade or soap. I'm most suspicious of the blade and soap, so I'll switch one of them back next time to figure this out.

You'll get there. It's nice to read you had a good shave. For me, part of the enjoyment of shaving with a safety razor is being able to try a variety of blades in a razor; usually some work better than others but part of that may be that are better with our skin, than others. It is great when you find a blade that suits you and works well with your razor. Cheers.

Hi mate, would you recommend this brush for face lathering?
@FriendshipShaving
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex. I like this one for face lathering. There is a slighter shorter brush - the 620, which a lot of guys like for face lathering but I like the 830 which has a little longer loft. I feel this is a brush that takes a little while to 'break in' through regular use. It'll last you a very long time.

Thank you for showing this fool proof method. I'm currently trying to polish up bad shave habits 😂. I just used this with the game changer .68 and had much more efficient shave. Now I'm curious to see how my other razors do. Will this work for slanted razors?
@FriendshipShaving
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it should work for slanted razors; I can't think why it wouldn't. I may have to get the .68 I love my .84 but it is starting to be a touch aggressive. I think my skin is changing as I get older. Cheers.
@Gotobecrazy

@@FriendshipShaving With the .84 I can do an easy 2 pass shave without touch ups. I recently took out the game changer for spin after inconsistent shaves with the Rex Ambassador. I did watch your video with that razor, I had a similar uncomfortable feeling after using the rex. I'll have to revisit at another time (maybe revisit all my razors lol) and follow your shave angle method. I read fourms and watched other videos and found a critical peirce of info It's 30 degrees from perpendicular ( you lower the handle 30 degrees), is that correct?
@FriendshipShaving
3 жыл бұрын
I think so, you can go the other way but whenever I get an aggressive shave or a razor I'm not used to I look for 30 degrees from perpendicular. It just worked well for me when I was starting out.

@@FriendshipShaving You're method seems to be working. I'm trying to fix my bad habits. I've always started with the blade guard and then lift the razor handle upwards like other youtubers, but seems like it not always ideal. I just want to get the most efficient angle as possible without scraping my face. Some where I read you want both the guard and cap touching the skin and at that point you're at the ideal angle. I just want to get a DFS or DFS + shave while my skins looks BBS lol. I don't need to achieve bbs everyday.

Absolutely. BBS happens by accident for the most part; for me anyway. I'm just aiming for an enjoyable and good shave and happily, I get one quite often.

I've not re-watched the video, Nathan but maybe I did go a little high but some people do have hair quite high up. To my knowledge, hair doesn't regrow thicker, it just grows back. It'd be quite interesting to see some research results on that. Cheers.

I'm sorry to read that, mate. Please make sure that you are not pressing the razor onto your face. Have you tried a variety of blades? I rarely cut myself these days but if I use a Derby blade, I cut myself every single time. I'm not sure what else to suggest that might help you out. Keep trying 😃👍
