The Explorer has always been a good $35,000 USD SUV. When it reaches $60,000+ it loses it's luster. I could never pay those prices for an Explorer, and I have had 7 of them since 2004. I currently drive a 2018.

I just bought one of these. One good tip is that in around town driving, if you leave it in sport mode, the engine doesn’t shut off. It still uses the battery for power and recharging but you don’t deal with the constant start and stop of the gas engine. Makes for a much more pleasant experience. On the road, leave it in Normal and get all the benefits of the hybrid.

I found your review very informative and I originally purchased the 2021 Explorer Hybrid. At first, I was quite pleased. The vehicle itself is great and I was liking the full V6 power. But after 3 to 4 days of driving, I discovered some pretty significant issues with rough transitions from a full stop (at a stop sign or traffic light) to acceleration. Some times it felt like the car lurched forward until it caught the gear. I couldn't tell whether it was the transition from electric to gas motor, the transmission not finding the right gear, or some combination. I suspect perhaps some of both. But after a few days of this in what was a brand new car, I threw in the towel and returned to the dealer and traded it back for an Explorer Limited with the standard 4-cylinder base engine. Needless to say, I gave up some money in the deal and learned an expensive lesson. I am not saying the Hybrid version doesn't have potential, but my advice is to very carefully test drive this car and make sure the transitions on acceleration from a dead stop are smooth enough for you and that you are also accustomed to the regenerative braking which feels *very* different than normal brakes. For some, it may work just fine. But going back to the non-Hybrid Limited was a great relief for me. Perhaps a slight less robust acceleration from the line, but a far smoother riding experience overall and perfectly adequate pick-up in my view. Anyhow, good luck to all in your car search and thanks to the Motormouths for a very useful video review. If I were to do this again, I would try and arrange an overnight test drive to fully put this new technology through its paces and assure its right for you.

Ford used to make very long lasting engines, but now they're switching to smaller turbo engines. The problem is: that they don't build the internals strong enough for the higher power output, from less displacement and fewer cylinders, along with higher cylinder temperatures and pressures; furthermore, they're putting these engines in vehicles that are far to heavy, in relation to engine size.

I had a 1999 V8 Dodge Durango. I loved it and I drove it into the ground after 20 years of abuse. I took it out on the beach frequently. The salt and sand destroyed the under carriage and rusted out the brake lines as well as the engine block. It was literally sputtering as I drove it for the last time to the Ford Dealership for my new 2020 4 Cylinder Eco Boost Rear Wheel Platform All Wheel Drive. I have to disagree with you about the power. For the last two years I have driven to Florida from Long Island New York as well as upstate NY through mountainous snow- covered roads. The power is incredible! The traction is incredible! This car loves to drive fast and hugs the road! I don't really care about the plastics etc. on the interior. Performance and comfort are all that matter to me! The seats are extremely comfortable! I have to remind myself to take a break and stretch the legs. With cruise control, lane assist, auto collision braking and navigation with my iPhone I can truly enjoy the ride! In ECO mode, at 63 mph, I get 20-24 mpg. I am looking forward to a better Hybrid!

I bought a 2021 Explorer Hybrid and drove it for almost a year and a half. I traded it recently and was happy to be rid of it. The 10 speed transmission was horrible. The shifting was rough and jerky. The transition from hybrid to gas was clunky and loud. It actually felt like something was going to break when the gas engine kicked-in. The regenerative brakes were very rough. Those were my major complaints. There's a list of minor complaint that I won't list here. I just glad to be rid of it.

The Toyota & the Ford don’t compete in my opinion. Why you say? The Ford is more for an outdoor person that tows stuff. The Toyota’s towing capacity is lower but, the Toyota consumer will only have a minority that will tow. The V6 in the Ford is for the Ford consumer who expects a V6 in an Explorer. There will be more Explorer’s towing.

I recently test-drove 16 new vehicles, including the Highlander XLE, Highlander Hybrid, Explorer Limited, and Explorer ST. The Explorer ST was easily my favorite; it’s a BLAST to drive, and the Explorer is much more appealing if you want to use the third-row seats. The Highlander Hybrid was just too weird for me; the sounds coming out of that thing sounded like a kid doing a “flying saucer” sound effect. Highlander interior is appealing though, except I can’t rest my elbow on the door while holding the wheel in ANY of these, which is a minor annoyance for me.

The Toyota might have Ford beat on fuel economy, price and reliability, I will give them that. What Ford is better at is aggressive discounting, predictable financing and great corporate relationships (rental/government/police/fleet). The two vehicles aren’t really fighting for the same demographic... example being people who tow a boat/trailer or police forces that have cops with giant belts/holsters getting in/out of, the armour (in some states/departments) and especially the electronics (lights, sirens, dash computers etc.). The Highlander is more at home with a person who goes over to RONA to buy lawn seed, golfs and a family that expects reliability and ease of parking. They are not wrong. Different demands/expectations for different audiences. Ford really only has to worry about Dodge... they have those very same advantages (rental/discounts/government contracts). And those Durangos and Chargers look way cooler, and meaner. Great video. I liked it. Thanks for the video.

Why do people care about resale? If you sell a car before 10 years old... you don’t care about money anyways. If you sell a car over ten years old, the extra you paid (plus the extra interest and extra taxes) cost a lot more than any retained value will ever recover. What’s best is to buy a vehicle that depreciates a lot but has warranty, and keep it for 15-20 years. Hyundai/KIA wins hands down, there.. having as good of warranty after two years as Toyota does out of the box. Don’t kid yourself about reliability, either (which has almost nothing to do with resale). Korean cars have come up a long way.. while Toyota is no longer what it once was.
