First crew arrival 0:14 seconds, Water on the fire 0:52 seconds, that is :38 seconds from arrival to water on the fire, that is awesome. Second crew arrival (best guess) 1:25 when a packed up firefighter walks in front of camera, 1:58 they final finished getting dressed, and tell the first crew to stop and back up, 2:04 unpacked FF tells orange hat to start attacking the fire again, 2:06 EGO FF says stop I got this, 2:19 REAL FF starts putting the fire out again, 2:47 we still don't have a charged line. Don't tell someone to stop doing a good job until you're truly ready to do the same good job.

There's so many reasons to give props for this fire. There was personnel on the scene prior to apparatus arrival so the CAN would've been ready right off the bat. Firefighters had water on the fire in SECONDS of the first due engine arriving. Building codes must be on point in this town, cause even though it looked fully involved, the fire almost looked contained to the original business where it started. (Yea I know that overhaul might find small pockets of extension, but you have to agree it could've been a LOT worse). Crews are cohesive, communicating, and just getting stuff done. Fire can be stubborn and it's very tricky. When you think you have it snuffed out there may be fire in a hidden place that brings the flames back to life. This can even happen a while after firefighters consider the fire put out. Firemen are aware of this characteristic and often stay a while afterward with their hoses ready in case a flare up happens. The firefighters got this fire under control quickly but at the end of the video there were flames coming back to life in places they could not see because of the smoke. However in this case it was still possible that there was some fire in the roof or attic of that building or the buildings next door that could start the fire again in the adjacent structure so those firefighters weren't out of the woods yet. I would like to shout out to firefighters everywhere who put their lives at risk to keep others safe from fire.

None of the firefighters on the nozzle made entry nor were they exposed to smoke. A transitional attack such as this works well when you have a second crew to pack out and make entry after your first arrival unit knocks the fire down. Now, if the second crew just had water in a timely manner, that would have made the transition better.

On the contrary, I think maybe these firefighters had some recent training. UL and NIST research talks about exterior transitional/indirect fire attack: "A firefighting operation involving the application of extinguishing agents to reduce the buildup of heat released from a fire without applying the agent directly onto the burning fuel (P. 1830, NFPA Glossary of Terms, 2018 Edition.) This form of fire attack involves directing fire streams toward the ceiling of a compartment to generate a large amount of steam to cool the compartment. Converting the water to steam displaces oxygen, absorbs the heat of the fire, and cools the hot gas layer sufficiently enough for firefighters to safely enter and make a direct attack on the fire."

@jacobhillhouse5080
Жыл бұрын
@@retiredfedleo6441 As you are somewhat correct with the UL study the context is incorrect. A stream directed at the base would accomplish extinguishment at a much higher rate. The term you’re referring to with steam conversion is the “in-direct attack method” and has been proven outdated with new construction and modern fuel loads of current day fires. The American fire surface has shifted to surface cooling as the primary form of fighting interior structure fires. Everything gets better when the base fire is extinguished. The fire in this video is already ventilated and the steam is just being expelled from the structure. That is not nearly as effective as direct attack on the burning fuels. The firefighters need to get close to the window and apply the stream on the same level with the ignited fuels. That will prove the best outcome. This tactic is also directly supported with UL on multiple studies and has become the standard for modern fire attack in buildings.

Honestly, this crew did an amazing job for what they had on hand. More than likely, that old engine didn’t have SCBA seats, which means that FFs would have to don them outside of the rig. Why waste the time if all you’re going to do is soften the target? They had a second crew that was masked up for interior suppression right after the fire was knocked. No one wasted time, dinking with things that were not immediately important. They stretched a line efficiently and got water on the fire quickly. The only thing that might have been better is the immediate use of a deck gun, assuming that a water source was nearby. Solid grade A work fellas.
@polarchills4067

You're probably the most level-headed comment I've seen here. The first arriving engine was an older bench seat ford. The SCBAs are stored in the rear left compartment on this rig, so it takes a bit of time to pack up which isn't necessary if working from way out in the yard. Only problem is that engine doesn't have a deck gun on it because of the size.
