That last one looks like the smallswords from McBane's book!

Smallswords have to be the most gorgeous swords aesthetically.

The smallsword i use/prefer has a 33 inch flattened diamond blade & robust solid hilt for fighting. Though it is a couple hundred grams heavier than those meant mostly for looks. Mine was made specifically as a sidearm for a Navy officer to use on board ship against cutlass etc. Hence the extra weight & all that.

The last one reminds me a bit of the épée de soldat, which was kind of like a late 17th / early 18th century pre-spadroon or perhaps a military smallsword with a heavier blade that was capable of delivering cuts and parrying sabers and other military swords.

It's nice to see a smallsword with a decent-length blade, given what various period masters wrote. Le Sieur Labbat, for instance, wrote that a smallsword should reach the navel when set with the point down between the feet. Measuring conservatively (to the bottom of the navel) & assuming 6 inches for grip & pommel, that gives me a blade length of about 36 inches. & I'm just 5' 10". People's proportions vary, of course, but it seems like many smallswords were a bit shorter than what masters like Labbat & le Sieur de Liancour wanted.

I'm fairly sure the first one is from the 18th century, not the 1640s (and probably the 3rd one as well). The facetted style is typical of the 18th century and the smaller pas d'anes are also indicative of later smallswords; they became vestigial over time.

Agreed, the first smallsword is likely 1780s and probably not silver (I have the exact same hilt on one of mine and cannot find hallmarks). The second one is likely the earliest, early to mid 18th Century going by the steel fittings and large annuletts. While the third one is probably mid to late 18th cent. Possibly early 19th Cent.

they can be half sworded easily in close quarter combat due to the lack of cutting edges

small swords can be described as overly specialised in design
