I like to add - and this is propably a coincidence- that out of five Schiavona I was able to check out in the Blademuseum in Solingen, four had blunt or leather padded Ricasso and were designed so that you could comfortably put your indexfinger over the cross. Only one had a sharp Ricasso. And none of the examples had a thumbring (though I know many Schiavona have it).

various types of sword blades were manufactured in Germany and sold to the rest of the world and hilted locally through out the early modern era

I actually quite like the thumb ring on Walloon swords (at least of the Amsterdam type). It gives a lot more control over the sword, especially since there is no cross to put your finger over.
