Today we're looking at five different 4 on the floor grooves from different genres and time periods. We'll start in 1973, work our way to 1978, up to 2015, and then jump back to the 20s and 30s with The Jazz Age. In all of these grooves, the intenstiy and power with which you attack the kick drum is important to think through. It's not just one size fits all. And you also need to remember to watch out for flamming (kick drum hits before the snare drum or visa versa). The one other thing is to develop solid technique. Make sure that you're not sloppily flailing around the kit, letting your foot come off of the kick pedal, bashing the hi hat, snare, and kit as hard as you can, etc. Lets make these grooves musical, let's let them breath!
