Tip: You HAVE to memorize land marks when flying LR. There was a circle path near where you took off. There was also a small pond. At altitude memorize the valley. Every time I do LR.....I always look back and memorize land marks. It's easy to get disorientated. I'm lost! Ok...where is the valley. There it is. OK...where is that circle path near a pond. There it is. Good luck!

thumbs up to the tips above! you can never undermine the value of making an orientation flight of the immediate surroundings before venturing out LR! at least brief yourself of a map view before the flight. having an idea of general direction for home is better than making a scenic orbit at the peak ending in disorientation and panic. as a retired airline pilot these are things we prepare before even getting off the ground.

The best way to get more confidence is to test the gps rescue many times in a safe environment. Find a large field and fly at least 100m away from you, then try activating the gps. If everything works do the same but turn off you radio completely to test if the automatic failsafe works. I also test gps rescue every time I do long range flights, you just need to make sure it activates and that the home position is set properly.

Awesome longrange thriller ;) I can understand how much tension and heartrate you must have had ;) Awesome scenery and hope you can do much more mountain adventures (more self controlled probbably). In the distance that must have been lake Como, right? It can be disorienting up there - I find it easier tho to fly in manual (acro) mode - there you can descent way faster (but more dangerous). The 2km vertical dive could have been don in 20sek I guess ;) Good that GPS RTH is now reliable enough to help us save our gear. One time in Auronzo I was not so lucky and lost my drone to 2 eagles (didnt see that they are breeding there and for sure did defend their nest). Have subbed and will follow your tests. Will check out if I see telemetry examples with dashware. For RX Telemetry logs: my tango2 combines all logs of a day in one CSV file - did you find a way around this if you fly many packs on a day? I guess I could re-set the date between flights, but that's inconvenient.... greets from Austria, Mario
@fabyt68
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mario and thanks for the visit, it's an honor to have you here. I'll reply to all your questions in oldest to newest order. Yes, the lake in the distance is Como's, it's about 40Km from where I live, and I plan to go there for every "seriuos" flight. As for the OpenTX telemetry, sadly no, I don't have a way to automatically separate each single flight data from the one that contains all the info from a specific day, I have to do it manually. I could write an excel script, though, that makes that job, I'll think about it. But, as a workaround, i just change the drone name between flights, adding a progressive and starting from "1", thus forcing the transmitter to write a separate file each time, since the name of the drone is part of the filename. Cheers from Milan, Italy

These mountains are amazing, just a few short minutes and you can get to the snow and cliffs! I've been looking at the Chimera 7 too, it seems much better at avoiding vibrations than other 7" quads. I know that fear you felt when you lost video - I once clipped an invisible tree coming down a mountain, but luckily the quad spun around and levelled out again without crashing. It can help with orientation to look back on the ascent to see where you've come from. I get lost easily too, especially once I can see over a ridge and new areas are revealed. Really good to see GPS rescue was able to get you back in line of sight! I think you could increase gps_rescue_throttle_min a little so it doesn't drop and climb on the way back, and maybe a higher gps_return_angle. And also, you can set your transmitter to record GPS telemetry (and display it on screen) as another backup in case you don't have it in goggles/DVR when you crash. Looking forward to seeing some more of your flights in the mountains!
@fabyt68
3 жыл бұрын
thx, i really suggest the Chimera as a 7" inch just for the vibrations. Previously, i tested both the Geprc Mark IV HD 5 and the TBS source one V3 with 7" arms. Both of them are 5mm thick arms, and you can easily bend them on the bench if you apply a little force. Further more, i couldn't avoid the motors getting hot even with rpm filters on AND the standard filters sliders at 1.0. On the other hand, the chimera has 6 mm arms that don't bend at all, and i can easily run with the standard filter sliders all the way to the right. Only drawback is the added weight, but there are several things that can be done, check my specific video on that : kzitem.info/news/bejne/lK2GtHWGcHimiYo . As for backup gps telemetry, i have a widget on my radiomaster tx16s transmitter, which shows the quad distance in real time AND records the last know gps coordinates on the SD so that in case i can check them whenever i want.... i got it from tmac, check his video : kzitem.info/news/bejne/zqePyZuGk5difno
@treesifpv3848
3 жыл бұрын
@@fabyt68 That sounds like a much improved frame design, and the thicker arms are worth the weight if they control vibrations. Currently I can't raise filters above 0.8, which means I can't run higher PIDs to help with windy weather. My 5" quad is so much easier to tune as vibrations are well controlled. Your other video has lots of good weight saving ideas to try.

Hi, I just got my Chimera 7 with the polar camera and have flown it for the last 3 days and am really happy with its flight characteristics so far. I'm flying it in the suburbs of Vancouver and only seem to be able to get about 1.2 - 1.5 km away before the video feed starts breaking up. I'm using the DJI version 2 goggles stock, the TBS Tango 2 Crossfire radio stock. The air unit is set to 1200mw, 50 mbps, High Quality. I look at your setup and it appears that I need to add some additional setup. Would like your thoughts, thanks.
@fabyt68
3 жыл бұрын
Hi, unfortunatly the goggles V2 have 4 linear antennas, whilst the V1 (like mine) have circular polarized (LHCP) antennas. The 2 antennas on your Air unit also are circular polarized (LHCP). So, sadly, the V2 goggles with the standard Air uniit have a very low range, due to incompatible polarization. If you want more range, change your v2 antennas with 4 original antennas (for the V1 goggles) , or any aftermarket offering for the V1 goggles, as long as they are LHCP antennas, and you will see a HUGE range increment. Just be careful, though, that if you use the V2 goggles with the DJI FPV, drone you will need to switch back to the stock V2 antennas, because the DJI FPV Drone also has linear antennas that need to be matched.

I'm guessing the part you're talking about is when the GPS Rescue was active. The GPS isn't very accurate at determining altitude and the settings weren't the best, and so the drone kept wanting to go higher, but then it overshot the correct height and corrected by lowering the throttle, at which point it would descend too much and apply throttle again and so on.

well micro tx v2 gets to 1w output power, tx lite 2w. you will lose video signal and battery far before you will need 2w outut power, so i'd stick to the micro tx, only question is about reliability, meaning that for 1w output power the micro tx needs some extra cooling (heat sinks on internal components) as per tbs statement, check their site... that stacks up as extra cost/time, it's up to you.
