I remember watching this I was pretty impressed. I thought Corman was just doing trashy flicks in the 70s. Frankenstein Unbound was pretty polished, just a beautiful picture. I thought the story was creative the way they re-did the Frankenstein story and the monster look was also special.

After watching this review I’m going to say that it’s not like the book which it’s ’loosely’ based on. The book makes even less sense and the main character is even more unlike able. In the book it starts off in the year 2020 after the Third World War in which all the countries using nukes bombing each other causes time displacement rifts to randomly happen also with these time rifts and nuclear fallout it can combine fictional universes with reality. Joe Baldawin is the first person to be transported one these rifts with his car. He’s transported to the fictional world of the Frankenstein novel and meets Victor and tells him about the novels events. Victor thinks he’s crazy and doesn’t believe that he won’t stop the monster. Comes to the part of the Frankenstein novel where Victor comes face to face with the monster after the monster killed his brother. Joe stops them from killing each other and another riff happens that merges the fictional characters of the Frankenstein novel with the real 17th century where Merry Shelly was writing the book in Lake Genivia with lord Byron, her husband and such. Joe is a fanboy for Mary Shelly and glad he gets to her when she’s like 19 or 20 and still attractive and doing the poly thing (says something like that in the narration of the book.) Anyway he forgets about Victor and the monster for now since he wants to bang Mary Shelly and does after he tells her how popular and successful her book and writing become (now his car does not print out the book.). So after he has sex with Mary Shelly he decides to leave Switzerland and stop Victor and the monster from killing each other so the book won’t change in the future or something. So Victor made a bride for the monster from the corpse of Elizabeth but Elizabeth thought Victor was a dick for bringing her back to life and killed him and she thought the monster was strong and hot so they bang. Joe shows up, sees them banging with Victor’s dead body on the floor and then takes the machine gun mounted on the back his car and kills them so they won’t create a race of monsters. As another time riff stars to open and not knowing what will happen he burns down the castle since it has the lab and all of Victor’s secrets on how he made the monster as well as the bodies of the two monsters.

Guys, the buried bicycle explains the end of the movie. The obsolete creation (the monster) must be destroyed so that the new, improved creation (an AI?) can exist. Although bonkers at times, this movie is vastly underrated and the stellar cast carries it through some outright silliness. Ironically, looking for a good copy of the movie only pointed to the old, obsolete versions on VHS and Laserdisc. Let's bury these and and replace it with a hi-res version!

I remember seeing it when it came out on VHS. Despite it being very cheesy and lacking logic, I found it strangely fun and amusing in a S.B.I.G. kind of way. If it wasn't for John Hurt, Raul Julia, Nick Brimble and the rest of the excellent main cast, I probably would not enjoy this film nearly as much. The actors make this Cornball Flick watchable! By the way, if I may add, former Australian Rock Band Lead Singer, Michael Hutchence plays Percy Shelley.

Why are you stressing about the multicolored eyeball? The cover of Robert Rodriguez’ Planet Terror featured Rose Mcgowen with a Gatling gun for a leg(also in the movie itself, and equally illogical). He did it because it was a striking, provocative image. What’s wrong with striking, provocative images? Also, just my hypothesis, but I was thinking that maybe the multiple eye regions are meant to suggest the various time streams that got disrupted as a result of John Hurts’ experiments.
