I have an idea you may like. Get two crocodile clips large to fit to a spark plug and the other end to go to ground. That way you could have a good connection to the plug and ground to check spark and not depend on it laying on metal. It would work on small motors as well as VW and other auto motors.

Mustie1 I have heard you say that sanding off the coil wouldn't make a difference but I beg to differ. I just found a push mower at the local dump that wouldn't start, NO SPARK.... I pulled the coil off and it was just as rusty as the one in this video. I cleaned it up and reinstalled it and it fired up on first pull and runs like a champ... FREE mower. Give it a few tries on your different engines...

I swear, you get your hands on soooooo much free cool stuff that even Bernie Sanders would be jealous. I wish I knew half of your "finding cool stuff" secrets. 11:50 The first thing I was thinking is a safety switch under the seat. I used to have a riding mower that would not turn over unless you were sitting on the seat, and as soon as you got off the seat, the engine would shut off.

What did happen to this machine in the end? - I would have liked to have the video part 2. Just on that coil, I might have been tempted to swap the good coil on to the dead side of the engine, just see if it did actually run on that cylinder, but given it's an old video, I assume it's either, a woods machine, or it's now rusting in piece? - I'd love to know. It looks like decently built machine anyway, and not unlike the same chassis construction as he John Deere machines of around the same time. That front axle looks nice and beefy, and cast rather than fabricated from folded tin. Judging by the fact that the rear axle has "proper" means to mount the wheels, and a Hi-Lo transfer, my assumption would be that it's not the usual Peerless transmission on there? - Yeah, I would have invested some time into that one, even if it were only for my own amusement.

Well the hoard paid off well for at least two of the three parts you needed (so far anyway)! Once you get the other jug firing and making combustion (which I have all the confidence in you that it will) that is going to be a powerful engine, for what ever you do with it. With the high and low transmission and electrical deck. It may be a good machine overall. Good luck. I'll be standing by to hold the light or watch that it doesn't try rolling off the lift, until you get back with a solenoid.

Usually it's a valve problem and the valve seat is broken. Replace the head if so. The compression may be low on this one because of the head. Check valve adjustment on riding mowers often. If the rocker arm is very loose, it's probably the head.

@jamesb1221222

I have a very similar tractor my father and I picked up for free. It has the 22HP version of the engine that is on yours. Body has slight differences, but it was the model with the "automatic transmission" that had the shift lever over one of the back wheels. We brought it home and it had similar electrical issues to yours. We bypassed all of the safeties, cleaned the flywheel magnet, blew out the fuel filter and put gas in it and it fired right up and idled like a motorcycle. The thing runs like a champ, but the main issue is that the transaxle is chewed up. It has oil pressure in the transaxle but it won't move at all. If you wind up parting your tractor deck, could you let us know how much you'd want for the transaxle that's in yours? We would also need the plate that goes around the shifter in the crotch area as the one on ours has no provision for it. Don't need wheels either. I'm almost positive it would bolt up with minor mods. Thanks for reading and sharing your experiences! On another note, if I can't get this operational, i'm going to see about possibly finding a 1:1 right angle gearbox and turning the frame of the tractor in to a generator and air compressor pump assy on wheels
