You should do the urchin video, the more exposure of people gathering and culling the purple urchins, the better
@christophercarrillo4726
Жыл бұрын
We don’t need to take all the urchins out because they’re actually healthy for the ecosystem. However it would help to cull their populations a little! I hope the sea star waste disease can go away during this flipped El Niño season
@catchncookcalifornia1574
Жыл бұрын
@@christophercarrillo4726 Agreed. In SoCal I do see some urchin barrens which definitely warrant close monitoring and encouraged harvest but I have not seen anything down south like the full-scale barrens of the North Coast! Likely in part because sheephead and lobster also help pray on purple urchins, and the kelp down there is perennial and not annual. It is important for us to remember that even the purples are native but they just need to be closely watched to maintain the balance.
@92bagder
Жыл бұрын
Yup that's why I said cull, not exterminate. You can probably form a good business harvesting purple urchin and make fertilizer from their bodies. Maybe put them in tanks and feed to get a better uni yield. I think sushi bars should have a uni tank, like how fancy restaurants have live lobster tanks

I’m in southern Australia (Victoria) and I’d spend way too much time under water looking for the man in the grey suit to catch anything. Still love your videos thanks. And dive belts yeah we use them on fishing rods, their called sinkers lol. Normally we don’t attach them to people. lol. I’ve seen hooks as thick as your thumb straightened completely out. Der der der det. Der der der det. I surf but not down this far south. My brother worked offshore on the gas rigs and the amount of great whites here anyway has exploded over the years. Love how you include those tidbits of historical info on the indigenousness people from the area! Great reminder that there is so much more to this land than the shopping malls and amusement parks most people come here for. The keyhole limpets and snails taste great sautéd in a Greek marinade! (I used one meant for calamari). Never would have thought to try them without your encouragement. Preciate all you do and share!👊🏼

Man, these sessions make me wish I lived in SoCal. I'm relatively land locked here in the ATL. So diving is more a luxury, usually 4hrs away (Savannah, Hilton Head). The fact that free food is down the street basically, in the ocean, fresh and tasty is half the reason I'd love living in these areas. Aaahh well, guess I just have to 'settle' for my fresh lake fishing (fine with that btw) and look to the day I return to SoCal and join Kevin.

Love all the latin binomials and education. I also appreciate the cooking experimentation. As well as the indigenous history facts! I'll take all I can get on that education! Do you recommend any books on that subject? I'm also gravitating toward chopsticks for pretty much everything. Forks feel like I'm just shoveling food. lol I had spaghetti the other day with chopsticks and my partner looked at me like I was crazy. So much more control, though. Looking forward to the ideas you have for the future like urchin and lobsters. I'd also love some seaweed foraging. I think an intertidal themed hot pot would be super cool, too!

Would love a dive video on the urchin! Would you consider culling purples and feeding them to nearby fish?
@catchncookcalifornia1574
Жыл бұрын
There is some research on this in northern CA where urchin barrens have been much more problematic than in SoCal. To my knowledge it is still inconclusive as to whether smashing urchins releases more sperm and eggs into the water and exacerbates the problem. For now, it is only legal to harvest them (not smash them) unless you are part of an official and licensed urchin culling survey. You might be able to use urchin for chum to bring in fish, but again that might spread the sperm and eggs.

Kevin: Have you ever attempted cooking the gumbo0t chiton (Cryptochiton stelleri)? Native Americans and early Russian settlers in southeastern Alaska did so. The writers of Between Pacific Tides (one of my favorite old texts) detailed their culinary assessment of the gumboot: "After one experiment the writers decided to reserve the animals for times of famine; one tough, paper-thin steak was all that could be obtained from a large cryptochiton, and it radiated such a penetrating fishy odor that it was discarded before it reached the frying pan." I do know there are some current recipes for it. Any thoughts?
@catchncookcalifornia1574

Great question! I agree that it has been a Native American food for thousands of years. However, I do not believe it is listed as a species that is allowed in CA. I will have to look into it more though.

Where in Southern California do you recommend for a beginner diver?
@catchncookcalifornia1574
Жыл бұрын
Any cove on a 1-2ft swell day that is not in a Marine Protected Area (MPA). But I do not recommend that divers try it without being accompanied by a much more experienced diver. There is a lot that can go wrong out there that an experienced diver can help you avoid to stay safe.

Are snails toxic?
@catchncookcalifornia1574
Жыл бұрын
Good question. Some could be, especially if they are predatory and praying on filter-feeders during toxic plankton blooms. The wavy turban snail in Southern CA is a generalist herbivore (eats seaweed and coralline algae) however, so it is doubtful that this species would be toxic.

I’m with you on the chopsticks. My wife’s Korean and I’ve learned to use them for everything. Have you ever had Razor Clams? If so, how do they compare to the Limpets?
@catchncookcalifornia1574
Жыл бұрын
Lol there is likely a reason that millions of people use them every day right? It has been years since the last time I had razor clams but if I remember correctly the flavor was similar but a bit more subtle. Limpet has a more robust flavor a little more roasted or nutty notes than the more mild clams in my opinion.
