But I think that nobody in France will tell you that "nénufar" is actually correct. Same goes with "éléfant". And I'm still curious why "hospital" wouldn't work when "clef" does... @@fili3907 it's technically still usable but as archaic, I dunno why. I guess it's just "old french" that didn't persist to nowadays. So, technically it should be correct but if you write it in an essay, most of the time, the teachers will tell you you're wrong so they're either bad teachers (which wouldn't be a surprise in France) or it's either no more valid now. For example, the word "kiku" (listen) can be written きく, 聞く, or 聴く depending on your preference, but if you write it 効く then it has a completely different meaning (to affect something). Technically there's a slight difference in usage between these spellings, but the meaning is generally the same.

If I ever run into some Japanese People in America or see an opportunity to attend a beginning Japanese course to learn with others, I'll try again. I appreciate that Japanese Citizens learn English but it's hard to force myself to learn Japanese when I don't have to (have to meaning, "Learn it or go hungry."

@@robertolanzone As I said, there is a slight difference in usage, but it's not necessarily incorrect. There are a lot of words that can be written in kanji, but typically aren't, like 沢山 (たくさん), 勿論 (もちろん), 有ります (あります), 居ます (います), ect. It isn't super common for the word 聞く to be written in hiragana, but it generally depends on the style of the writing. For those wondering, it was originally clef but it was simplified overtime to clé, but old french is still generally accepted when it's homophonic

All of these examples are just lenition and eclipsis and are used in different contexts, so not interchangeable like I am assuming clé and clef are from this video. Also bád has a fada, as well as Átha in Baile Átha Cliath. And tiomáineann is more like "Drives", the root verb is tiomáin.

this always makes me laugh. i first thought "clef" was the "old" way of writing it, and "clé" was the recent one, but it seems that we can actually use both. please do not confuse people with clé/clef. also remember, a key, a you.
@aurav4643

You're actually right in both of your sentences Clef is the old and clé the new. It's just that many French people decided to ignore the new way ! Thus, both are accepted
