The Buckhorn Exchange Restaurant
If eating meat is your thing then I have found the place for you.
This is the Buckhorn exchange.
And every blog or article written about food in the Denver area has recommended this location in their top 10 places to eat and see.
In fact, when i posted on my social channels that we were spending 30 days in denver, multiple friends commented that I had to check this place out.
I will never turn down a meal that involves big game, but recently my wife and I took on a fitness challenge called 75 hard, and part of the challenge was to select a diet program of your choice and of all things Anna chose to be a vegetarian.
This obviously put a wrench in my plans around eating at a restaurant known for its meat.
Thankfully a friend came to visit during our last week in Denver and I now had a fellow steak enthusiast to enjoy this adventure with.
So before I go into the dos and donts of this amazing establishment I need to give you some background.
The Buckhorn exchange is located at 1000 Osage St, Denver, CO 80204
And what I found unique about the building is that every place within a 1 block radius was a newly constructed or renovated building with the exception of this restaurant. Somehow this amazing dining facility has lasted the test of time since it opened in 1893.
The popularity and demand is so high that I also recommend you make a reservation. To give you perspective I went to their website and was only able to get in at 5pm on a wednesday.
What I also found fascinating about this place is that so many celebrities and presidents had dined here over the years. We were sat at the back of the restaurant in a small half circle bench style table and was informed by our server that Teddy Roosevelt had sat at our exact same table.
To say the least, the atmosphere is a 10 with the walls lined with taxidermy animals ranging from small birds to huge moose heads.
But of course the big question that anyone wants to know is, “how was the food?”
Although google has over 2,700 reviews with a 4.4 average rating I have to give this place a 5, or 2 thumbs up, or whatever indicates the highest rating possible. When you consider, the atmosphere, the history and then the menu diversity this is one of the coolest places to see.
Brendan and I ended up getting a little crazy and diverse as we tried the rattle snake appetizer.
I envisioned a rattle snake cut open by its belly and picking meat off with a fork, but I quickly learned that rattle snakes dont have a lot of meat so they serve it to you on top of a bed of spicy queso.
In addition, I had a friend warn me about the Rocky Mountain oysters which were a common menu item in other denver establishments. But if you dont know what they are, a rocky mountain oyster is essentially a buffalo testicle cut up into small slices.
There was no chance I was going to order these and waste my money but I did tell the server that if someone else ordered them to please bring one small piece to my table to try.
And since we are friends now. friends dont let friends eat nasty things, I have to tell you that this is something I would not try again.
Overall, if you are in Denver I believe the Buckhorn exchange is a must visit food establishment.
But if you feel compelled to try the rocky mountain oysters please comment in this video here or tag us in your post on instagram or facebook.
