A wholesome experience onboard Thai Airways.
With transit time extended from 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, I arrived at the gate in less than 1 hour thanks to the quick security lines and the concourse A gates being near the security check. In this case, my reason for panicking was proven to be useless, but had I been assigned gates C, D, E, or F instead of A5, I would've missed the flight due to those gates being 10-20 minutes away. The wheelchair staff at Bangkok was friendly and professional, but the security check staff were beyond unfriendly - I mean, I experienced many friendlier TSA staff members compared to them.
I was given the privilege of boarding early because I had to accompany a wheelchaired senior citizen who was part of my travel party. I was welcomed in a very warm way, and after walking through the wrong aisle, I arrived at my seat, 52K, on the right side of the plane. My plane was an older Boeing 777-300ER, HS-TKL, and everything inside it was, definitely, older. The seat was older, with an older Panasonic IFE TV installed, a slightly faulty seat pocket, and charging ports beneath the seat instead of beneath the seat in front of me. I needed a tad of effort to recline the seat, but for a 5.5-hour red-eye flight like this, I was able to sleep for 3 hours. The big plus point, it had footrests installed, something many airlines have ditched, adding comfort to the seat despite the age.
The flight took off slightly late, and what I found strange was that the formal welcome announcement was announced right after takeoff instead of on the ground. On this 5.5-hour flight, I was served not one, but TWO meals! The first one was an egg sandwich with a bottle of water, and the second of which was the classic seafood Pad Thai with various condiments including a croissant and some fresh sides. This was something to marvel at since I have taken some 5-hour flights with only one meal served.
The IFE system was very up-to-date in contents albeit I expected a tad more in terms of music content. Due to the age of the aircraft, it was, definitely, slower in responsiveness, but it still maintained the same, tidy layout. The cabin crews of this flight were a team of absolute gems, for they were friendly, energetic, courteous, and fun to chat with (one of them even was put in disbelief when I disclosed my nationality and seemed to have some interest in me and my culture).
The landing was 30 minutes ahead of schedule, and despite some technical hurdles in the Visit Japan Web of one of my travel parties, I was off to the Keisei Skyliner station in less than 40 minutes right from the arrival concourse, while many of my fellow tourists took up to twice as long. Special thanks to the ANA ground staff at Narita for assisting me and my family with this, despite the stress I endured because of that technical issue!
Overall, this flight reaffirms my love towards Thai Airways, for they managed to turn me, who was apathetic to this airline at first, into someone who would try this airline again dozens of times.
