Tim...when I first put my rooted cuttings in pots, I use a combination of Pro Mix HP and Agway pine bark mulch (50/50 mix)...this mixture gives me good drainage at the critical time just after the cuttings have been rooted...they are most likely to be overwatered at this time which is the # 1 reason why rooted cuttings die (from drowning the delicate root system)...after the trees become more established and are ready for uppotting, I switch over to Miracle Grow potting soil from there on out.

Yes, the styrofoam packing peanuts allow for good drainage at the bottom of the pot...keeps the roots from drowning if I overwater.

The best thing about these inverted cups is that they are very difficult to knock over accidentally... :) :)
