In June 2024, we completed the installation of 136 battery units at the 150MW/300MWh Ferrybridge battery energy storage (BESS) facility in West Yorkshire.
The Ferrybridge site once helped power the UK with its landmark coal-fired plant until its decommissioning by SSE in 2016. Construction of a battery asset heralds a new era in the site’s energy evolution - bringing the flexibility needed to help the UK get to net zero.
Once operational, SSE’s flexible battery storage asset could power close to a quarter of a million homes for up to two hours during times of peak demand.
Work to install the batteries, supplied by Sungrow, was carried out by our principal contractor for the project, OCU Energy, and Notus Contract Lifting Ltd.
