This was a great way to organize the tier list, using names like good, situational, and mostly useless gives you a WAY better understanding of why exactly certain abilities are in a tier above/below others - instead of the usual lettered tiers or “high/mid/low tier” that I’ll see a lot of lists use. Plus you just explained your reasoning well with examples. Great list!

hot take but Haunt could make the situational tier. in this meta where you're not gonna die or approach a lot, if someone splats you, you have them marked for as long as the rest of the match. I like this as a frontline myself when the build im going for has space for it, it's been very useful for catching flanks and constantly calling them out in vc for my team. I dont expect total agreement from everyone but in my experience this has saved my team countless times from an enemy flanking/sharking nearby.

for effect doubler: even if you need more than 9 utility subs, run a main of it instead. ALL effects that can be put in those sub slots can also be put into a main slot giving one more AP. the main slot that effect doubler would be put in to be specific. srly, give ONE loadout that uses doubler where i CANNOT rearrange the effects to not use doubler! just ONE!!

Imo stealth jump is the most versatile ability, even more than ssu, scu or lde. Literally put it on anything and it works, slayers make more aggressive jumps, anchors can just jump more often etc. Lde is close second but there’s no point on something like neo splash

Big agree with LDE > SCU. I've always argued with my friends about how LDE would make farming specials faster since I'd be able to throw more bombs and shoot without running out of ink. I think ink recovery should be lower though. If you check the EXACT stats for it, it makes basically no difference except for ink recovery in kid mode. No one recovers ink in mid mode! 1 pure ink recovery makes your tank fill half a second faster in squid mode which is barely worth it for one PURE. ISM/ISS have better effects

I will take my standard ink efficiency abilities over LDE any day. I do see what Chara is saying about how strong it can be, but I personally would much rather have consistent ink consumption out of my weapons. Look at it this way, you start off weak and only get stronger as the opponents score, which is better than starting stronger, I guess (and I can see the reasoning of why it is), but you still have to let the opponents score to use it before the match's end.

Hey…. Special power up is useful for more than JUST bubbles :V Tenta missile spammers use it, baller benefits from it fairly well. All of them have decent bonuses, besides Bomb launcher and Ink storm :/ I’d say more situational. Maybe if ink storm had increased inking, or more AOE, and the bombs had bigger explosions. Then maybe

I honestly dislike MPU being added.I didn't like damage up in the first game either. It felt like it was too vital to winning or losing (assuming neither team was abusing the respawn ones)

Hot take but drop roller should be a little higher. Sure you can be bombed, but in any other scenario if someone is camping your landing you can counter them with drop roller, and even tho it doesnt look that useful, it can save you from an annoying roller, since you get short invicibility frames after landing and buffering any direction on your left stick. It saved me a bunch of times, so its definitly useful

IF YOU ARE USING STEALTH JUMP! Remember that is does make you jump a bit slower, and if someone is right next to your jump, they can still see it. It's still a good ability, but you do have to remember the drawbacks and it's limitations

Calling it now, Opening Gambit gonna be in whatever the equivalent of F tier is. Edit: Three things: Well, I was correct, who could’ve guessed. 2 the amount of “STHU I hate you with a passion” I could feel from those last few abilities is great. 3, I use Haunt semi regularly (it’s my only shirt that has 3 subs of MPU) and especially for mid lines it works well because of said respawn punisher effect, though I will admit it can be kinda limited.

i can only say this for solo queue, but there a stealth build is unnoticeable. nobody that ive encountered recently seems to know how to counter my wepon and kit (the tetra dualies with autobombs and splashdowns). this vid finally made up my mind for my hats main ability, thx for posting this

I prefer Ink recovery over the other savers, a 2.90 rate compared to 3 seconds doesn't seem like much when a sub of it is ran, but it can contest and fit well with other utility subs as it just makes life easier, not to mention it is active at all times and doesn't need to be stackable like the other savers. probably my favorite ability but sadly fitting 4-5 utility subs leaves less room for abilities like mpu and special charge

Ability Doubler seems to exist exclusively as an answer to a design problem faced in Splatoon 1: Splatfests force everybody to wear the same shirt, and in the first game, that meant you were stuck with 10 points of Special Saver on your build, whether you wanted it or not. Particularly in the first game, I'm a real jumpy, paranoid coward in Turf War, so my death rate was low enough that special saver is basically worthless to me and would clog up a ton of stat points every Splatfest. Ability Doubler improves the situation by (temporarily) giving you a customizable shirt that gives you three 6 point slots that could be any regular ability, making it (almost) the same as any regular shirt, but for any ability. I'm a Gold Dynamo main in Splatoon 2, so I'd prefer to run a lot of Main Saver, Sub Saver, and Damage Up in Turf War. Other weapons may prefer to run other abilities, and Ability Doubler enables that while still forcing everybody to wear exactly the same shirt. Outside of that very specific utility related to what is basically a Splatfest quality of life improvement, Ability Doubler has no use because the entire point is to be (mostly) interchangeable with just any random regular shirt.

A few abilities are kinda skill dependent too. Like QR is good if you struggle at staying alive (kinda like me). I've also found Drop Roller to be quite useful. It has saved me from dying after jumping plenty of times, maybe even more than Stealth Jump. Plus I think it's more fun.

I was going to give a respectful rant about Drop-Roller, but I suppose you're right. I think I'll try running Stealth Jump a bit more. But you've got to admit, the speed boost you're given after any jump is exhilarating. Just like Opening Gambit, except with an actual use (that sadly can get countered).

Harassing the other team beyond what’s reasonable or safe for me, making my teammates carry the objective instead of myself as much as you can in solo queue (easiest in Clam Blitz but very aggressive “This way!” spam works in TC and Rainmaker), stuff like that. RP is perfect for me.

1 Sub of ism on dynamo gets you 6 flicks, 1 main of ism gets you 7 flicks, max lde gets you 3 extra flicks. The thing with main savers with lde on dynamo is do you want to risk not having the savers for a good bit of the game on modes like tc.

Now now, I can see an opening for using ability doubler. Maybe you want multiple subs of something but not 1 main of it. For example, you could run abilities that you only need one/two of, like Bomb Defense Up, Quick Super Jump, and Ink Resistance.

As someone who is used to Splatoon 1 coming back to Splatoon 2 before the next game releases, the fact that MPU is a "nerfed" version of damage up and still incredibly powerful says a lot. I'm surprised they still gave some weapons a damage boost to be honest

i run ninja squid a lot on things with curling bomb ngl, or octobrush. the ability to sneak past with an extended trail or play bait does net a lot of kills in turf war. though in ranked i tend to run a full speed/attack build.

special power up is good for bomb rush you can get an extra couple bombs out. witch is better than armour because a bomb can cover ground and deal damage. its good for taking back zones. armour just takes one hit then its over, bomb rush forces the player to move out the way. can suction bomb rush a tower, rainmaker shield or bomb rush clam blitz net vacinity.

for bomb rush typically its better to just build more bomb rushes, the duration is already increadibly long so typically charge up is much more common, esp for firefin/sorella brella/neo splash

They should rework OG to "Opening Effort". They could rework it to where how far your objective goes you get more AP for the abilities OG gives you, and depending on how far you go, the stronger it is. Idk if keeping kills as a factor is a good idea, but maybe to keep the duration of how long it last(more on this later). After you die, the time limit is up, or even if you reach the cap on objective points(maybe 40/50 points made), you get to keep your abilities for the rest of the game. So it's dependent on how much you work, and score. The complete opposite of LDE.

it's actually easily possible to survive a bomb with the roll. As long as the thrower threw it a little to far or close and you roll right into it. You might take some damage but it's easy to survive.

Hot take: MPU is overrated, it's simply that the players who use it are good enough that wasting slots doesn't hamper their ability as much. Now, dont get me wrong it is a good ability at worst, but on some of the weapons we see it used on (that being, fast firing shooters that get damage from MPU), it really doesn't help. For something like the Splattershot, if you hit 3 times, you will probably hit a 4th, and even if you kill slightly faster, shooting one less shot to kill (and only in the situations where an opponent has not taken any damage) usually just turns a death is to a trade.

I agree that special power up is mostly useless, but I disagree about how you think the booyah bomb is terrible with special power up. Special power up increases the charge time of the booyah bomb, if you stack a bit of it it can charge really fast. It would be really useful in splat zones, if you charge and launch the booyah bomb faster, it means you can get the zone faster. Preventing the enemy team from getting a few extra points if you were using the booyah bomb with no special power up. And it also prevents people from killing you midair when you're charging it. I honestly think the booyah bomb is one of the best specials for special power up because of that. But that's just my opinion, and it's also kind of situational compared to the bubble blower with special power up. But the increased charge time really helps. I would honestly put it in situational depending on the special you're using, but I why it's mostly useless because of splashdown and bomb launcher. But stingray, bubble blower, ink armor (kind of) and booyah bomb are pretty good with special power up.

Thermal Ink is underrated. Midrange weapons like a Pro can really take advantage of it. I would put it in Situational, not mostly useless.

Pretty good list overall. I would disagree with you in that I think Ink Recovery should be in the Very Important Tier. I find it really useful to have one sub of Ink Recovery (Although I use two mains and three subs of it for Explosher as that is the only way I don't starve for ink). I would say the same for Special Saver. Just a single sub of it makes a noticeable difference. I also think that Quick Respawn should be higher. You say the focus now is on not dying, but what if like me you aren't an elite player? You can plan not to die but things in this game often don't go according to plan. I've found Quick Respawn to be extremely useful.

if u want to play more agro for a solo enviornment then yea QR would be more useful, for explo id recommend not doing more then 2 mains worth of ink savers, any more should just be LDE stacking isnt as worth it at that point imo esp since the weapons used in zones

What would make the tenacity respawn punisher, and jump roll ability stronger? I come from the perspective of a charger main, so a lot on this I already agree with except bomb throw up but that's probably because chargers barely have bombs, so I don't see the use.

My own Answers. I am not the most pro player... so...here's what I think could make the abilities better. With Tenacity, a MUCH better boost in special gain or more buffs given while teammates are respawning. Though the current meta is about not dying though, so maybe if it were to have special gain while enemies were dead? Respawn Punisher.... I think someone else is going to have to answer that. I still think it's fine as it is now, being useful on charger weapons, but to make it stronger, an equal amount of time for your respawn and opponents splatted by you. For Drop Roller, in the current meta, dodge rolling farther away to escape bombs. Maybe someone else could give their opinion on this ability.

Missiles use special power up, benefitting greatly from it. Aside from that it has no use however.

What are your thoughts on Special Power for Inkjet? For the longest time people would almost always run 2 subs for the special but now people have polarized opinions on it.
