Flying the outbound localizer signal in most situations uses normal sensing since you are flying the direction of the approach. The direction of the arrow does not change as you pass over it. The example you demonstrate is where there are two ILS's for the same runway. Both have the same frequency 111.10 but runway 24 is imyq and 06 is ibdl. As you cross the antennas your nav radio is switching ILS signals and shows the direction of the reciprocal runway ILS. Thus you are flying in reverse of the inbound ILS and require reverse navigation. This will confuse many people as the older localizer transmitters that send a strong backwards signal can be used to track outbound on the missed with normal sensing and allow inbound backcourse navigation with reverse sensing. I would recommend you repeating this demonstration at an airport with an ILS for one runway and a published Backcourse approach at the other. Fly the missed with normal sensing and then do a 180 and fly the backcourse. The BC autopilot mode was designed exactly for that purpose.

I didn't realize you had to turn backcourse off, I was treating it like a separate mode rather than a modifier for Appr or Nav mode, which resulted in some amusing loops last time I did an ILS approach with a backcourse from overhead along the localizer to a procedure turn onto the ILS. When I was coming back for the ILS I switched from Hdg to Appr and the plane immediately turned away from the airport again. D'OH!

Indeed a pretty uncommon way of using the bc; the usual use of it is to fly a published bc approach from the opposite side of the localizer and what it does is it simply reverses the sensing of the left/right radarlobes.

I had no idea what the backcourse button meant. I've always ignored ATC when they tell me to go around. Hehehe... Guess I should do the right thing and listen now.

So if you're doing a rnav apr will it do a full missed apr instruction? Some charts tell you to fly to a certain waypoint and do a holding pattern.
