Imagine a steamy Saturday in 1919. Saint Louis City inhabitants have escaped via rail to Lincoln Beach, for a playdate in the cool Meramec River. The energetic crowd carries on blissfully into the night. After much drinking and dancing, they settle in at plush lodging accommodations.
That former resort is now Castlewood State Park. Through the wonderful 3.4-mile Riverscene Trail, hikers gain high bluffs looking across verdant valley. Lower, the riverbank occasionally reveals sandy, idyllic beaches. Overgrown ruins encourage the imagination (to a certain twentieth century weekend, perhaps). Across time, it is the enduring river which has always been the scene.

My Thoughts:
The flyer had promised "edge of the bluffs ... stunning panoramic views." That was enough to hook my interest, for I was nowhere near the great western mountains. Plus, I needed a decent workout before devouring some always-sensational Saint Louis barbecue.
I ended up liking the Riverscene Trail-providing plenty to see in a compact package. My habitual inclination to get the hard stuff done first steered me into a counterclockwise trip. I explored some of the ruins but somehow missed the intriguing "staircase to nowhere." Refreshed afterward, I re-entered the city life, like many before.
