Totally agree. And it’s a safety hazard too. I constantly find myself forgetting that I-pedal disengages after shifting out of drive (eg 3 point turn) and I would expect the car to stop via regen only to realize it’s not stopping and needing to step on the brakes last minute. Someday someone is going to get into a accident bc of this.

Ioniq 5 AWD owner here. My buddy has an Ioniq 5 RWD and we've compared notes about range so I think I may have an answer for you about the AWD having a lower official EPA range. From my experience driving the AWD E-GMP car I noticed that in "Normal" mode the front motor usually stays connected for much of the driving whereas in "Eco" mode the front motor seems to be disconnected around 40 km/hr (sorry, I live in a country with proper units of measure so you'll have to convert to your peasant units yourself 😜). The screen on the dash shows no power to the front motor above 40km/hr in "Eco" mode and I occasionally feel a slight shudder and hesitation if I floor it as the front motor re-engages. I suspect that the EPA test cycle is done in "Normal" mode thus the AWD version doesn't get to fully benefit from that front motor disconnect feature. The official range of my Ioniq 5 is 410 km whereas the RWD version is 488 km. Spending most of my time in "Eco" mode though I can easily achieve the 488km figure and even can see 500km if I'm really careful which tracks with my friend's RWD stats. It would be interesting to see a test but Eco mode seems to level the playing field quite a bit in my experience.

Good review I have the Ioniq5 Ultimate on order but with all the delays I called my local Genesis dealership and was told 1 to 2 yrs wait time , 2 days later they called me with the choice of 2 care the Advance and a Performance I test drove both and to be quite honest I could not tell the difference between them in Eco or Comfort mode , yes in sport and of course the boost , but really that too me is a wait of time as is the drift mode. I thought the interior was beautiful on these cars ( in Canada both cars have the same quilted leather seats ) the only complaint for me would be the center console it would be better if deeper and if it slides back and forth like the Ioniq5. I liked the thick steering wheel I would of preferred maybe a different feel to the leather on the wheel it was a little too smooth . All in all this car is amazing as you said great highway drive it maybe a little over priced but end of the day I am very happy with the car I went with the Advance its about $10K cheaper and the only visible difference are the wheels and to be honest I like the look of the advance wheels better to me they are much more sporty looking and for sure easier to clean :) thanks again both of you for the video.

27:51 From a cross section I found for the front drive unit, these cars appear to have a radial spline style clutch. No different than the Center Axle Disconnect systems that RAM and Jeep products have been using for decades. This is pretty proven technology and should have minimal wear, especially because with an electric motor you can target a specific rpm delta relative to output (wheel) speed. You would never want to match motor speed to the output speed, because there is then a possibility the teeth aren't aligned and won't be any time soon. Because of this, some engagement harshness is to be expected with this style clutch.

The two deal breakers for this car for me were 1) lack of wireless Carplay and Android auto (huge miss for this price point), and 2) ipedal not sticking and having to engage it every time. Instead we bought a Mach-E which has wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, and not only has profiles for each user but ties your 1 pedal driving preference to the profile, so every time I get in the car and my profile loads up, the 1 pedal driving is engaged automatically and all the time. And when my spouse, who does not like one pedal driving, loads their profile, 1 pedal is off by default. It's perfect every time. The way it should be. If I had to tap that steering wheel paddle multiple times every time I drove the car just to engage 1 pedal driving it would drive me crazy. If they fixed those 2 things I'd consider buying one.

I have since bought the GV 60 I lucked out here in Canada got it within 2 days I test drove both Performance and Advance really hard to tell any difference only in the sport mode , the interior on these cars is amazing in Canada they are both the same trim inside, as for the lack of the car play I just bought the little box $100 works great and you don't see it. Downside of the 21's is that they are very expensive to replace compared to the 19's on the Ioniq 5. I was thinking of ordering a GV60 but early distribution is in the northeast and west, and I'm in Florida. Don't know when they plan to bring them down here. In the meantime, I really like my Ioniq 5 SEL in Lucid Blue RWD. I also dislike having to pull the paddle every time I get in the car to get to Ipedal. Really annoying they make you do that, and the other gripe is no wireless Android and Apple car play. You must reach really far beneath the dash to plug in the phone cable. Nominal, or more precisely “continuous” power is typically significantly less than peak, especially if the peak duration defined is short. Peak power is simply related to current density in the motor windings and the amount of copper, continuous is limited by the thermal design of the motors to lower thermal resistances to the coolant, the vehicle then manages the coolant temperatures.

a few things I don’t like about the GV60 is how small it looks and how busy the wheel design is. I would argue that with keyless cars, start/stop buttons are totally redundant. So are “power boost” buttons, the bottom of the accelerator pedal should be input enough to tell the car you want full power

@Slider68

FYI, if you add a rear LSD to a car, it will cause less oversteer and more understeer. Similarly if you have a RWD car with a stock rear LSD and the LSD fails, it will typically now experience severe oversteer. The reason for this is the more the rear axle tries to lock to the same speed side to side, the more difficult it is to turn (the car wants to go straight). I had a 1982 Camaro years ago that came with a 305 V8, a 4-speed manual and an LSD in the rear. At first it was a frustratingly understeering car, but once the LSD burned out the car became almost dangerous to drive at speed due to the extreme oversteer. Edit: the situation where an LSD oversteers is when you give it enough throttle/power to spin the rear tires, the back end then loses lateral grip and can severely oversteer. I still prefer cars with rear LSDs, but the suspension needs to be tuned (with a stiffer rear sway bar) to compensate.
@concinnus
2 жыл бұрын
Well, he's not asking for a basic mechanical LSD, but an active diff, which can redistribute torque more flexibly. More torque to the outside wheels means faster turning, like oversteer.
@Slider68
2 жыл бұрын
@@concinnus he talks about having the active LSD couple the left and right sides to make them spin the same speed so that is an LSD that couples left and right sides and does induce understeer. He is a bit confused about how coupling left to right impacts driving dynamics. For example he stated he wished the LSD would couple the left and right axles on corner entry, claiming that would generate oversteer. In reality that would generate understeer on corner entry. A brake based stability control system with a virtual locker (braking any spinning wheel) can generate oversteer but not an LSD that couples the wheels side to side in a relatively low center of gravity car or SUV (with low mounted batterys). The best solution for an EV is where there is an electric motor at each wheel (or at least each rear wheel). These can apply a higher forward torque to the outside wheel(s) and induce the car to oversteer in a controlled way.
@concinnus
2 жыл бұрын
@@Slider68 The dual-motor behavior you ask for can also be accomplished with a single motor and an active diff. That's how Porsche added torque vectoring to the 918 with only 1 motor on each axle. This is exactly what OoS and I are talking about. But dual motor may actually be cheaper and/or lighter by now, though.
@Slider68
2 жыл бұрын
@@concinnus Yes but those advanced torque vectoring differentials are expensive and inefficient as far as fuel economy is concerned. Honda even has one the they use in the Acura MDX and other vehicles that use wet clutches on each half shaft and an overdriven rear gear ratio.

Thanks for a great and detailed review Kyle. I think both the HDA2 availability and the five states limit is because the Hyundai Motor Group can’t build enough of these things and other high demand cars like the GV70. The GV70 Sport Prestige for example, stopped shopping with HDA2 middle of last year due to the chip shortage. So it seems they assigned the HDA2s to the Hyundai’s and Kia’s. Odd decision for sure. But it speaks to their inability to manufacture enough vehicles vs. demand, plus the chip shortage.

Kia does things very similarly, but not identically, and the Sorento is not an EGMP product.

@@Wasabi9111 Counter point to this, I have a GV70 that has HDA2 and honestly if you don't hold the wheel at highway speeds (70mph or more) it can actually be jerky like it's constantly trying to center in the lane. I took video on my phone of the wheel constantly moving back and forth trying to force the car in the center of the lane. So the hands free part of HDA2 can be useless sometimes, I think they need to back it off to not be so aggressive at lane centering and allow it a tiny bit of drift cushion. Otherwise I like it and I do use it on long trips, it's just not as smooth as I'd like it to be at the same time especially if you're on a highway lane that has a lot of camber to it.

@@t1328 the gv60 does have better minor UI, so you can tell it’s a more recent product. But to me these are minor upgrades. We much prefer the overall design of the Ioniq. We use it as a family car. The kids much prefer the much roomier 2nd row. Everyone prefers the open Ioniq cabin and storage. The gv60 is quieter and louder at the same time. I think the cabin feels more muffled and quiet, but the wind noise is definitely more noticable in the gv60, which I find more annoying. The gv60 is much more powerful, and it actually overwhelming since the wheels easily spin out of control. For casual driving the Ioniq is more manageable. I think I might have preferred the cheaper preferred over the performance model we have. I don’t know how the adaptive damper is calibrated, so sometimes it rides nice and sometimes it’s harsher than I would like. Overall, I love my Ioniq and I was hoping the gv60 to be even better. But we find ourselves constantly driving the Ioniq over the gv60. There’s something simple and easy about the Ioniq.

I have test driven V60 Long Range and I think it is really nice and practical car. Also bigger battery + more e-power is great improvement over older ones. We just do not get Polestar Engineered version here in Finland.

Ioniq 5 has HDA II so Genesis GV60 is inferior. Limited trim even has a HUD. They really screwed up their high-end brand with low-end garbage. But golly gee whiz, it has a spinning crystal ball.. what a cheap gimmick.

I like the finger print reader as added insurance against theft if it is needed in addition to the fob/phone. Tesla has an issue where thieves can capture your phone rfid signal and use it to steal the car. They issued the pin to drive to add security. This seems like the same thing but even more secure

I completely disagree rear wheel drive ev in snow is dangerous, the extra torque and hp can override safety systems and when in situations bwhere esp has to be off it’s harder to judge the power/toque , it’s far more important to get winter tires fitted than all season compared to sub 2.5b litre combustion
@concinnus
2 жыл бұрын
Any modern ESP has a snow mode, and is disabled by command only, not overridden by power, lol. It's a non issue. Agreed that tires are critical, though. Any area with more than a couple snowfalls a year should require snow tires imo, as Canada does.

@@concinnus no they don’t Id doesn’t only the all wheel drive does have a snow mode most just have eco/Normal/sports, I found out the hard way with a friend I. An Id4 launch where a burst pipe turned the road in to ice rink, thr only car that got up it was a Tesla duel motor 85 that over took us

@@ram64man So you're saying AWD is better than RWD on ice? Obviously. But Out of Spec's point was that RWD>FWD, not RWD>AWD. It also sounds like VW is artificially crippling the RWD's ESP, probably because they want or expect you to buy the AWD for snowy climates. Either that ice event was a one-off you shouldn't worry about, or you're in a snowy climate and should have an AWD ID.4 or a RWD with proper ESP.

Their isn't really a better material than leather right now. Tesla uses "VEGAN" leather and it falls apart right away. (Relative to the alternative KING, leather)
