supposedly somewhere in Japan, there are extremely rare composed cassettes which were given to the artists, composers and designers of the games just like the gold sonic 2 cartridges, but alas we wont really know if this is true...

Since not everyone can process what was said in the description, I'll summarize here. What you're hearing is the channel owner reconstructing the music with better samples, to hear the music the way it sounded before it was pushed onto consoles. 1) The way the console works, parts of the processor force the sound chip to put out compressed sound. It couldn't handle uncompressed music on top of what else it was busy doing. 2) Also because of the limits of the sound chip itself, certain sound samples (like cymbal crashes) cannot play at the same time as other sound samples. 3) Fixing this issue would have been too expensive to push on to the customer. They could have slightly sacrificed graphics to improve the audio quality, but this was at a time when graphics needed to be the forefront, at least on the marketting front.

3D Blast benefits more from the original non-distorted percussion more than S3&K imo. The crunchiness sounds better in S3&K, but for 3D Blast is just sounds... 'low quality'? Not really sure why I feel that way though.
@Turbulation1

Yeah from what I know, the samples in 3D Blast are far more compressed or just suffer from way more Z80 interrupts. And I think it has to do with how much storage space is dedicated to the graphics and the FMV, or with how the game is coded.@@Sengin31

I explain it more in this video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/tZh62JWEfKB7g2k But essentially I just used some default hi hat samples provided with Reason. I found ones that sounded similar and then tweaked the envelope until it was the same as the noise channel's envelope.

Yep! The problem is finding the source of the original samples. To my knowledge, Sonic 1 and 2 use the same set of samples, however no one knows their source. Perhaps they were created for the game instead of on a sample CD or synth, for example.

Unfortunately, there's only a few more that I could do! The original percussion samples for the "MJ" tracks largely haven't been found (Ice Cap, Launch Base, Knuckles' Theme, and a few more). So even I wanted to, I couldn't. If you want to hear slightly higher quality, you can use SMPSPlay to listen to those using the samples on the ROM (so without the Z80 distortion), but unfortunately that's the best that can be done at the moment.

How those games should've sounded on that Sonic Jam collection on Saturn basically. You had something that could output CD quality not too far from any of these games' release dates and them not adding it in 1996 was a missed opportunity. I mean now everything can be reverse engineered or remade like Christian Whitehead's versions were but before that, you just had an era where it was basically way too much work to restore audio or things about a game that ended up compressed into a Genesis cartridge. I know Sega is infamous for getting rid of source code for Sonic games so that's probably why they didn't sound like this. Anyways this shit sounds amazing. The drums sound so clean!! I'd love if someone could mod the Origins Collection for the OSTs to sound restored just like this. I feel like mods are just about as perfect as they'll get for making the best versions of these games except for the audio sounding like this.

Most of the change is related to the higher frequencies (above like 7KHz or so) and how clear the drum hits are (e.g. with Volcano Valley you can clearly hear that most of the snare hits are actually double hits). If you can't hear a difference it may be your speakers/phone.
