Hello Ken It is very interesting to see how you build the houses and garages, I learned heating technician myself, and I drove bus and truck for years, I have been busy emigrating for some time, but I am a single father with 2 children. There is probably nothing, Despite the fact that I like your way with the craft. Lg Lutz from Germany

I would personally prefer drywall rather than tongue and groove paneling. Also insulate and finish the garage with drywall. This design has what every "tiny house" I've seen is missing.... a two car garage.

Ken, at 5:45 you mention the "rafter maids or proper vent...to help the airflow go up to above the ceiling and then up through a vented roof ridge" Why is that necessary? What does it do?
@kenskarpentry
4 жыл бұрын
It helps with airflow between the inside and outside. Helping to keep the interior temp more constant

That's what my brother should have done when building his garage is put in a small studio. It would have been a good size studio for 2 people it's a 2 car garage with plenty of space to to walk around the car's. He put in a big attic but you have to bend down to walk around up there.

I use Roxul(Rockwool). It is more pricey than fiberglass, but not nearly double like it used to be. I'd say it gives a better bang for the buck due to how firm it is, the density and R-value, and the fact it is mold resistant and fire proof.

Ken, I love your work. But my question is in regard to the design phase. Was there any reservations about putting living space over a 2-car garage? I know it’s been done, but often with disastrous results.
@kenskarpentry
5 жыл бұрын
Sean M very true. This building is basically for someone that visits a couple months in the summer. So no idling of cars in the garage. Thanks for the comment
@1982MCI
5 жыл бұрын
Sean M if it was so disastrous then why do we have over half of the homes in the U.S. with attached two car garages??? It’s not near as bad as what your attempting to make it appear and in turn frighten and scare folks across the country. It is perfectly fine to have living space above a garage but the important part is how your hvac system is installed between the two areas and so forth. It’s just important that the builder adheres to the building codes, they do allow for this type of construction in the code and if you build per code then there’s nothing in the world to worry about at all so please quite trying to instill fear amongst people when it’s really yourself not knowing what the rules are. Take care and good luck!!!

@@kenskarpentry did you have problems getting permits? My brother built his garage in the mid 80's in California bay area. He should have put an up stairs studio because he doesn't park no cars in his shop/garage I don't think he's ever parked a car in that garage 30 something years it's been there.
