Okay, I gotta agree with you on your first point. And the cardinal sin of game design is removing control from the player so a four second animation can play. Nothing pisses me off more than games that do this for, say, opening a door. Some things you can get away with, when the pacing and the weight of the action calls for it, but if it's something you're going to be doing a LOT, like opening regular doors or collecting items, it gets very tedious very quickly. That immediate game feel is so important, imo, it trumps realism. I was actually thinking about this exactly the other day while playing Elden Ring. In that game when you pick up items, it's immediate. You just run by stuff mashing the button as fast as you can and stuff gets hoovered into your inventory. Why do this, especially in a game that puts so much weight in other animations (that remove control from the player?) It's something you do a lot of, and it's something that isn't important to the pacing of the gameplay. Just give the player the item and move on or players just aren't going to do it. If an item on the ground is going to put me in a four second animation while it removes control from me and plays a dumb animation it better be giving me +400% damage, immunity to everything, turn me gold and change the music and then give me a blowjob.

Great quality content, and even if I'm not a game developer (a musician), all of these are very helpful. When you make a song, the rythm must come naturally and lively so that the listener can bop at the same time.
@TachyBunker
Жыл бұрын
@William Braddell "overly rythmic" is nonsense since music is by the definition of sound, always rythmic. But what you're talking about kind of puts a concept of complementarism between, for example visuals and music. However, mostly anyway, what works is that they work towards the same aesthetic (although music is much more precise at the emotions it conveys, images aren't completing a balance, they go in the same direction). I took that from referencing my favorite audiovisual experiences, like the Metroid Prime games, Minecraft, ridley scott's movies, etc...
@TachyBunker
Жыл бұрын
@William Braddell So sound is not rythmic? How do you measure pitch and oscillations by the way? Not by frequencies AKA cyclic rythm measurements ?

It’s amazing how much more immersive and satisfying it is when a game gives really good audio, visual, and “feeling” feedback to a player that engages all the senses. I see a big lack of carefully thought out feedback in a lot of solo-developed games and in my opinion it’s a huge part of what makes them feel, well, like one person made it in their bedroom. Taking the time to make every part of a game rewarding through proper implementation of audio and visual cues really goes a long way in making your games stand out from a sea of sameness.

Honestly i hate that impact feel in certain games like smash ultimate n Smash 64 for example i hate jumping n attacking n not being able to act a second after hitting or landing on the ground n it feels like it take 5 minutes before i can control the character again! This y i like Nickelodeon all star brawl 1 n PlayStation All Stars so much it has good feel of impact on the attacks without having the player sitting their for several unnecessary minutes. It's like irl if i punch someone i gotta sit their for 10 seceonds before i can hit or move again, what person in irl freezes after doing any kind of action?

Hey thomas, really like the videos. I was wondering if you can make a tutorial about backgrounds again if possible. The problem i have is when i draw a background in pixel art to match my pixel perfect camera the background is too small or too big. I cant get size right at all when working with pixel art. I like to use 32x32 or 16x16 and a pixel perfect camera at 320x180. If i design a 320x180 background it never fits properly. Any ideas on what im doing wrong? Would be massively appreciated!

Player feedback. great topic! As in terms of gameplay responsiveness, I say I'll also prefer responsiveness over for example being ideally animated but with more delay. That's what makes the combat systems in Platinum game titles like Nier Autmata feel so nice. There is still some feeling of weight in the animations, but it's really responsive and a lot of animations can be cancelled for newly input actions
